Marcus Sakey, in his first novel, writes with the skill of an author who has had several bestsellers "under his belt." The plot development is believable and fast-paced. the characters are well-developed and multidimensional, and the suspense is constant. Without going into much detail, The Blade Itself is the story of a good man who made some bad mistakes earlier in his life and has recently become a victim of circumstances he helped create; and where his efforts to rectify his current plight results in dire consequences and a dramatic conclusion. With The Blade Itself, Sakey has taken his first step towards entering the 'big leagues' of thriller writers. Enjoy!

Great debut 18 Jun 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
When Danny Carter decides to run out on criminal partner Evan during a pawnshop break in he manages to go straight and is now a project manager in the construction industry. Evan takes a fall and after seven years of jail time returns to Chicago aiming to get something back in return for not grassing on Danny. What follows from there on in had me hooked.

Sakey writes well, gives loads of background detail & keeps the plot running nicely. The ending was a bit of a letdown but apart from that it was a good read. Aims for Richard Price or maybe Dennis Lehane territory but doesn't quite get there but bear in mind this was Sakeys debut novel. I will be reading the rest of his work with interest.

Evan and Danny were small time criminals, growing up together and getting into scrapes together, it was a way of life. Then a burglary doesn't go to plan, Danny gets away and Evan, out of control isn't so smart and gets caught and goes down for it. Things have changed since then and Danny had left it all behind, gone straight, got a decent job and made a new life for himself with Karen. The past in the shape of Evan is about to catch up with him, Danny owes big time and Evan's not taking no for an answer.

A fast paced thriller, easy to read and with those attention-hugging qualities that keep you gripped from the word go right through to the satisfying tension-filled ending. It's not a literary masterpiece or filled with mind blowing twists but it's a great read, the location is brought to life and the characters are well written with the good guys being not too perfect that you find them unbelievable and the baddies being truly bad. The movie rights for this book have already been sold and if done well it will make a great movie.

I recently discovered this author when reading an advance copy of No Turning Back (also published as The Amateurs) and was so impressed I ordered this, his debut novel. I'd be hard pushed to say which I preferred and his other novels have already made their way onto my 'to read' pile.
