Netherlands released, PAL/Region 2 DVD: LANGUAGES: English ( Dolby Digital 2.0 ), Dutch ( Subtitles ), SPECIAL FEATURES: Biographies, Collectors Edition, Interactive Menu, Photo Gallery, Scene Access, Uncut, SYNOPSIS: Abel Ferrara's film caused a stampede when it was shown at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival. That it is being released in 2001 says a lot about what the film promises, and what the film delivers. Matty (Matthew Modine) is a popular, pampered and prosperous movie star with the sort of substance abuse problems common to Mr. Ferrara's characters. The balance of the film is concerned with Matty's quest for forgiveness and redemption, a quest complicated by the fact that Matty has no clear idea of what he is atoning for. Like most of Mr. Ferrara's films, "The Blackout" takes place in a trance state - events are fuzzy, line readings even fuzzier. There are mysterious ellipses in the plotline and lots of droning electric guitar work on the soundtrack. ...The Blackout (1997)
Abel Ferrara gets together a dynamite cast (Modine, Hopper, Dalle) and largely wastes them in a predictable - if well realised - tale of celebrity debauchery. Ferrara as ever excels in showing depravity as Modine indulges on a weekend of very bad behaviour but the following quasi-mystery section is deeply predictable and feels more like a TV movie fable (albeit with added sex, swearing and violence) than the work of a great director. The wonderful Beatrice Dalle is utterly underused in one of her rare English language appearances and Dennis Hopper wheels out his phoned in straight-to-video ranty schtick.
I watched this film based on the actors and actresses in it. Not heard of it before or what it was about but thought I'd give it a go. It has a very slow build up, painfully slow at times. As we follow the main characters downward sprial. He is an actor who after being rebuffed by his girlfriend goes on a wild binge in Miami fuelled by drink, drugs and sex. After getting his life together back in New York his thoughts pass back to his time in Miami, he goes back to discover some shocking truths about his actions.
Thankfully it is well acted and has quite a good ending, worth a rent but not great. 6/10
For anyone who hasn't seen this, you gotta. This is one of those gems that gets overlooked. Mathew Modine and Abel Ferrara are on great form. The story of a movie stars decline into hell. Thats a bit of a short description - im not too good at descriptions! Its basically the protagonists fall from grace, i guess, torn by a failed relationship with the character played by Beatrice Dalle (who is a great actress). Also, features a good acting performance by Dennis Hopper and Claudia Schiffer (who here makes her acting debut, if im correct). Its a real cracker of a movie. Independent movies at they're best. And for anyone not familiar with the director Abel Ferrara, you should definately check out some of his other films - a true master craftsman. Abel produces cinema with a soul. Definately check this film out.
