Book Description

1 July 2010
An ancient painting, a magical labyrinth, and skeletons found in a locked room.

For centuries, Blackhope Tower has been shrouded in intrigue, centering on a labyrinth and painting in the Mariner's Chamber. When fourteen-year-old Sunni Forrest visits the tower and sees her stepbrother, Dean, disappear, seemingly into the painting itself, she must find him and risk being drawn into the heart of the Blackhope enigma. This action-packed debut follows Dean, Sunni, and her friend Blaise on a journey to the heart of an age-old mystery.

4.0 out of 5 stars Words and Pictures 14 Sep 2010
By Book Gannet TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
When Sunni Forrest chose to base her art project on Fauvo Corvo, she thought her biggest problem was finding out that fellow student Blaise Doran had picked him too. Until her annoying step-brother vanishes - and reappears inside one of Corvo's paintings!

Now it's up to Sunni to get him back, with Blaise following close behind. Which is lucky for her, because whatever mystery she has stumbled upon, it's only the start. Soon Sunni needs all the help she can get.

Clever and action-packed, there's plenty going on in this story - at times a little too much, perhaps - but as the tale progresses and settles down, we're left with a brave heroine, her courageous friends, a few villains, several labyrinths and lots and lots of mysteries. Full of wonderful ideas and fascinating adventures, this tale excites from start to finish. I'll never look at a painting the same way again.

5.0 out of 5 stars A gripping story set inside a painting 8 July 2010
Format:Paperback
Aimed at older children, this is a gripping magical mystery story, and a great achievement for a new writer.
Three children find themselves trapped inside a complex and detailed Renaissance painting - and need to find their way home ......
This is the story of their journey back to the 'real' world.
The writer's passion for art is clear - her two main characters are both keen art students - and her creation of the Renaissance artist Corvo is so convincing I wondered whether he was a real artist I hadn't heard of. Although there's a lot about art in the book, the real story is the children's magical and mysterious journey through new worlds, new dangers and new realisations about the people they meet along the way.

The pace of their adventures and the new worlds they discover within the painting make this is a rattling good read. I was completely gripped by it, and read it from start to finish in one go - I just couldn't put it down!

5.0 out of 5 stars Watch out JK Rowling, you've got competition! 7 July 2010
Format:Paperback
Right from the first line I was hooked on this book. Within the first chapter one of the main characters disappears setting the scene for a brilliant adventure to get him back again. The author obviously has a background in art as the whole book is set around the structure of paintings and what goes on in the minds of the people who paint them. And Flavin obviously has a wonderfully creative mind as she paints a world of monsters, myths and magic around the fascinating concept of layers of a picture. By the end I was wondering if Fausto Corvo really was an artist and whether he really did paint enchanted picutres! If I hadn't had to go to work, I wouldn't have been able to put this down. A truly excellent read. I can't believe this is her first book. Can't wait to read the next one!
