Book Description

16 Dec 2011
As World War II drew to a close, Britains aircraft companies were aware of the fact that development was to become even more important for their existence. Designs were constantly being developed with a view to producing aircraft that would satisfy the requirements of both the military and the potentially lucrative civil market. One such company, General Aircraft Ltd, decided to merge with Blackburn Aircraft Ltd to form Blackburn and General Aircraft Ltd, based at Brough, East Yorkshire. They were awarded a contract to construct for the RAF the charismatic Blackburn Beverley; the largest transport aircraft to enter RAF service during the 1950s. This story of the aircraft is comprehensively covered utilising over 180 colour and black and white photographs. A description of the aircrafts service history around the world with the RAF is covered, using maps where required.

The Blackburn Beverley
I am thoroughly enjoying this book which is well researched and give a real feeling of what it was like to operate these mighty machines. As a captain on the Beverley out in Aden it brought back memories of my life 40 years ago. There is also a half page about my first flight in the beverley where a few things went wrong which went down well. I am not used to reading books where I know a large number of the characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Discover a big whale 17 Oct 2012

I very much enjoyed this book which is well researched and provides a comprehensive overview of the history of this previously unknown to me transport aircraft.
The gensis and history of the aircraft are fully covered and a the inclusion of testimony of men who flew this giant, as well as from the mechanics who made them fly make this book a very pleasant reading but also an excellent reference book on the Blackburn Beverley.
Good quality photographs provide nice views of the aircraft, a chapter even includes paintings of the Beverley and a modelling part covers scale modelling of the Beverley.
The plane looks ugly but its nice to read how proud the crews were of their "flying whale.
