Ben can't stand the guilt any longer, and goes back to Chicago to check on his old partner. At the same time Ben's Wizard, Quester Thews, goes off in search of the missing books of magic, as was shown to him in his dream. And a third dream was sent to Willow, Ben's companion, about a black unicorn that she must go in search for. When Ben returns to Landover, he find that Meeks, the old court wizard who had sold Ben the kingdom, had returned to Landover, only to take over in Ben's role. Worse still Meeks has stolen Ben's identity, and Ben appears to everyone as a common worker.
