Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

The Black Raven is Book Two of The Dragon Mage, and the tenth volume of the Deverry series, a fantasy epic consisting of three interrelated quartets. As Katherine Kerr says, the past and the present weave together in these novels, and the final volume will link with the first to reveal an overall design akin to a Celtic knot threading back and forth upon itself. This is a strange pseudo-Celtic world in which reincarnation is a reality and past lives forever affect the present in surprising and unexpected ways, so that while The Black Raven can be read alone, it is advisable to begin with the first book Daggerspell.

In a complex novel of civil war, sacrifice and power, what impresses most is that an epic canvas is used to tell a strongly characterised and very human tale of hatred and destructive evil, and of the consequences of past malevolence on both the heroine Lilli, and the Prince Maryn. By keeping the narrative tightly focused around a small number of characters, and by maintaining strict limits to the rather elaborately conceived elements of magic and the supernatural, Katherine Kerr ensures that her fantastical history does not overwhelm the more personal and affecting dimensions of the tale. The result is a polished, emotionally involving and powerful novel in which even the dreams of a dragon may come evocatively to life. --Gary S. Dalkin --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Review

‘An unusually scholarly writer of fantasy.’
TELEGRAPH

‘Much as I dislike comparing anything to THE LORD OF THE RINGS, I have to admit that on this occasion it’s justified.’

The tenth installment of Katherine Kerr's epic Deverry Cycle, The Black Raven, will not disappiont lovers of the previous nine. Kerr once again weaves a story full of magic, mystery, romance and feudal warfare to keep readers spellbound from the first page to the last! The Black Raven continues the stories left off by The Red Wyvern - in both Deverry of the 800's and of the 1100's and in Cerr Cawnen. The Black Raven adds a new dimension to the tale of the Deverry Civil War, introducing Prince Maryn's less favouable personality traits, updates Rhodry and Dallandra's positions in the war with the Horsekin, and also returns to Cerr Cawnen and the story of young Niffa's plight. The stories are masterfully written and flawlessly woven together in true Katherine Kerr style - a brilliant book all round that leaves you virtually panting in anticipation for the next book. Read it!!!

Simply amazing! 9 Sep 2002
Format:Paperback
This amazing epic goes from strength to strength and Katherine Kerr never fails to amaze me. The plot thickens and the book had me desperately awaiting the next trip to the bookshop in dire need to read the next installment. A brilliant read which Intertwines Celtic Mythology and the Dark Ages to create a superb fusion between the both - a must read!

I only finished reading the previous 9 books in this series a couple months ago and I felt that they were starting to lose the certain something that caught my attention in the first few. THE BLACK RAVEN has recaptured what I fell in love with in this series. It explains some things that were merely hinted at in other books and developed a number of characters much more who were merely introduced before. The cliff hanger left in this book is not uncommon in this series and I noticed that with nearly every book in it. The climax of many of the books comes at the end, but I've come to accept that. I eagerly await the next couple books. My only complaint was this book was too short.

An excellent continuation of the Deverry series!
I'm not sure how Ms.Kerr does it, but she doesn't seem to lose her touch. This is another mesmerising installment in the story of Rhodry, Prince Maryn, Nevyn and Dallandra. Read more
