Book Description

Spartans do it with discipline.

Biting Love Book 3

Times Square on New Year's Eve. A million partiers chanting the final seconds. This year, it's a countdown to death.

My name is Twyla Tafel and I've uncovered an insane plot to unleash berserk vampires on those unsuspecting revelers. I have to stop it, armed only with my great admin skills, my useless art degree--and Nikos, a severely hot vampire who I'd love to photograph as a Spartan king roaring his muscular challenge at the Persians.

But Nikos has issues, if you know what I mean. Roadblocks in his psyche that say stop when all I want is go-go-go. See "severely hot", above.

Although if I finally break through Nikos's reserve, I may get more than I bargained for. He's seriously big, seriously built, and more than just a tad dominant. Still, it's time to push my limits and find out who I really am, so I'm willing to try...I think. I'm sure. I'm mostly sure. Until he starts stalking me with those sable bedroom eyes and long, sharp fangs--!

Material Safety Warning: Contains 50% high-voltage sex by volume. 10g seriously hot Greek vampire, 4g curvy, competent heroine, 7g explosive action and gritty language. Made on equipment used to process snarky comments. Some light bondage may occur during handling.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid Addition to the Series 20 Mar. 2010
By Tracy - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
If you're unfamiliar with Mary Hughes' Biting Love series...well...rectify that as soon as possible, but don't start here. The series starts with Bite My Fire: A Biting Love story and continues with the stronger second installment, Biting Nixie: A Biting Love Novel, and they're fun, relatively light, but definitely sexy/steamy/erotic vamp romance novels that blend humor and danger together quite nicely. The Bite of Silence is third in the series, but a short story instead of a full length novel like it's predecessors. Hughes has managed to condense the best parts of her books and deliver a powerful, funny, sexual, and surprisingly complete tale in a much smaller package. I believe, however, that this story would definitely feel lacking to anyone unfamiliar with the series, so start from the beginning.

In The Bite of Silence, Nixie's best friend Twyla, Admin. Assistant for the mayor of Meier's Corners, is off to the Big Apple for a little New Year's Eve partying. When she boards the plane, however, she finds the object of her most delicious fantasies seated in first class. Niko is tall, dark, and destructively gorgeous...and Twyla's also pretty sure he's a vampire...but he's stubbornly refused to give her the time of day since he moved to town, so a two hour flight with the vamp is JUST what the vacation gods ordered. But Niko's not as unaffected by the delectable and funny Twyla as she thought...and her "vacation" surely isn't going to go as smooth as she'd hoped when she realizes that someone's trying to turn all the vampires in NYC into slavering, bloodthirsty beasts as the ball drops on the New Year and Twyla and Niko are the only two who can stop a madman from destroying them all.

Points to Hughes for delivering a very well-rounded story in such a short format. There's even a bit more character development than I'd anticipated - and something that's so often lacking in stories of this length. Admittedly, I've read the first two books, so I'm already familiar with Hughes' world and vampire mythos, and I DON'T think that the book would read nearly as well for someone who isn't, so I rate it four stars for lacking any real world building at all. Other than that - very well told.

5.0 out of 5 stars Short but sweet (or rather sexy!) 27 Jan. 2010
By V. G. - Published on

The Biting Love series is just downright amazing, and this book is no exception. It was great to see Twyla have her own story since I've loved her since Biting Nixie. While this story was much shorter than its two predecessors (Bite my Fire and Biting Nixie) I felt no less satisfied when I finished reading it. Once again Mary Hughes has managed to create a hot vampire story that isn't the least bit angsty and dark like other book in this series (ok maybe a little dark, there are vampires after all) with an incredibly strong and vividly funny heroine. Nikos is just downright hot. Seriously read this book, read the series, its all amazingly funny and sexy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Love this series! 13 Jan. 2010

Really I can't believe more people don't talk about this series. I loved it! It's fun, sexy, fast paced, and just a blast to read. It's not dark like many PNR romances are, but yet it's sometimes serious without being heavy. My only complaint is that this isn't as long as the other books in ther series. Fun books!

2.0 out of 5 stars Too short - no depth 6 Jun. 2010

I love this book series but this one was really just a short story; 6 chapters read in a day of spare moments. Moved too fast with no tension and development of either character. The main V-guy starts out not giving her the time of day but in 5 chapters its a relationship. I love fantasy but how about a bit of realism. Getting to know each other like the previous books with Nixxi and Elena. Some meat to the story rather than; I ignore you, wont speak with you, I own you, have steamy sex with you, rinse, repeat, HEA (happily ever after). Disapointed but will read anything else she writes :)

2.0 out of 5 stars Plot? What plot? 29 Dec. 2010
By BettyLou - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Bite of Silence is ideal for a quick read on the beach. It would not appeal to the serious reader due to lack of plot, character development, and if purchased for the Kindle, no blow up doll is included. Some reviewers mention their fondness for other books in the series, however from this short sample, I would not be inclined to pay for more of the same, even with the promise of additional chapters.

Perhaps when using a free sample as a marketing tool, one should consider the quality, rather than quantity of the product. After all, the no cost book is supposed to induce the reader to purchase other books by the author. Why, then, offer less than the best?
