Book Description

A dark combination of fantasy, comedy and graphic violence.

Clinging to the bar running along the front of the platform, Sergeant Osric has a lot of time to think about how he got there. About how he’s shooting through a forest on a rocket powered railcar. About how a grinning thief is clinging to the same bar beside him. Most of all, though, about how he’s heading for Bytarend; a town no-one has heard from in almost a hundred years. There has to be a reasonable explanation for their silence, after all. Osric tries to think of a reason that doesn’t end in his horrible death...

... he can’t come up with one.

About the Author

An avid reader from an early age, Simon Cantan loved to get lost in the worlds that Piers Anthony, Douglas Adams, and others created. When he read Harry Harrison's "The Stainless Steel Rat Gets Drafted" at the age of thirteen, he knew he wanted to write, and has been pestering people about it ever since. Two decades later, Simon has published several books, including the "Bytarend" series, "Shiny New Swindle", and "Hard Vacuum". He continues to write science-fiction and fantasy, usually with a humorous slant to it. More details about Simon and his books can be found at http://SimonCantan.com. i thoroughly enjoyed this book. I wasn't to sure in the beginning about how I felt about the story but after a few more pages I found myself hooked.was quiet disappointed when I found it was the only book, but then when I found it was the authors first novel I was impressed and cant wait for the next one. though having started so fantastically , I think he may have built himself a large cross to bear. here hoping you manage to excel in all you write/

3.0 out of 5 stars easy read 17 April 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I struggled to figure out the target audience for this book as I'm sure it's meant for an adult reader but in my opinion is really a young adult book as the writing isn't quite sophisticated enough for the adult market. This said it's an engaging story that flows well.

There's a handful of errors that need ironing out, often sentences with words missing and some punctuation issues. I did find the overuse of the word 'loomed' annoying and the use of 'span' which is a measurement of distance instead of 'spun'. But the word that annoyed the heck out of me was the none-word 'gotten' which does not exist in English language usage, the past participle of get is got, the use of this often American English word is popping up far too often with new writers. I'm surprised the author's writing group didn't point this out to him as he credits them with help and advice.

I liked the characterisation within the book and the author's ability to keep the dialogue fresh and the thread of the story intact, however I did think chapter one was a non entity as it gave us information that was not relevant to the actual story and set up a different story that went nowhere.

I did feel let down by the last chapter as the story seemed to end abruptly, it was almost one of those, 'he woke up and it was all a dream' endings.

On the whole I did like this book, but marked it down from four stars to three for the use of the word 'gotten'.

5.0 out of 5 stars A real page turner with lots of humour 1 April 2015
Format:Kindle Edition
This was Simon Cantans first published full length story. The original version (The Bite At The End Of The Line) was very good and left me wanting more. Simon has since done a complete re-write and re-published as The Bite On The Line. Whereas the first version was good, this new version is nothing short of excellent! It gallops along at a breakneck pace, is exciting, improbable but somehow all too believable and is also funny.
The characters are very real, most of them human; apart from, of course the life leeches, the lifeless, the dark mages, the various were-animals and the strange creatures in the forest. You'll have to trust me on this one, the humans are very human even if they sometimes have difficulty staying that way! Having read this first book in the series, I wasted no time in ordering books 2 and 3.
I can highly recommend this book and feel sure that once you've read it, you too will want to carry on with the series.
This review is based upon a free copy which I received from the author.

I actually cant believe how much I enjoyed this book. At first I though that it would be too much fantasy for me but after the first few chapters I was intrigued with the story line. Further in I did laugh out load and downloaded booked 2 straight after.
I received booked 1 free through Kindle but it was a book that made me want more. Even if after reading the description you feel this is not your type of book (like I did), give it a go i think it will surprise you.

Wasn't sure what to expect from this book, but after reading only a page or two,I knew that I was in for a great read. Great characters, and well thought out situations, and I thought the names of the characters were very cleverly devised. This book was very funny from beginning to end, kept me amused the whole time I was reading it.Reminded me very much of Terry Pratchett's style.Thoroughly enjoyed this book.Well done,Simon Cantan.
