Julie Highmore shows great craftsmanship in orchestrating this cross-generational tale of love and loss, honesty and dishonesty and the complexities of human relationships. Highmore writes with a cool authority on each complex situation that she has created. Every character, from the tiny child with its lost toy to an older woman who has found her lost love, and found him no less perfect for his physical imperfections, is convincingly captured on the page.
To use Masterchef terminology, Highmore's earlier books were delightfully entertaining cocktails; her last book, The Message, was a sophisticated starter but this is the main course, the real meat and drink which best displays her talent. Bring it on, Julie, we want to see more!
