Review

'Where Highmore excels is in the unsentimental way she writes about the dilemmas life throws at us. There's also a mordant, black humour to her writing, which keeps the froth at bay'

Product Description

It's easy to make mistakes. The hard part is keeping them hidden.

Emily spends a few precious hours with her lover, then picks up her children and returns to normal married life. Her brother Ben's career has crashed with the banks, and suddenly he has nowhere to go. But they must both put on a brave face for their mother's sixtieth birthday.

Fran doesn't feel old. Mostly, she's worried about her increasingly depressed husband Duncan, and his slightly odd behaviour. Why did he think they'd been to Florence? Who is Alexa? And she doesn't really want a fuss over her birthday, but her daughter insists they must celebrate. Holding tight to their own secrets, the family gathers around Fran, but as one small revelation follows another, no one can foresee the huge repercussions of this birthday.

Absorbing read 12 Jan 2011
By Beverly
Format:Paperback
Julie Highmore shows great craftsmanship in orchestrating this cross-generational tale of love and loss, honesty and dishonesty and the complexities of human relationships. Highmore writes with a cool authority on each complex situation that she has created. Every character, from the tiny child with its lost toy to an older woman who has found her lost love, and found him no less perfect for his physical imperfections, is convincingly captured on the page.

To use Masterchef terminology, Highmore's earlier books were delightfully entertaining cocktails; her last book, The Message, was a sophisticated starter but this is the main course, the real meat and drink which best displays her talent. Bring it on, Julie, we want to see more!

Buy this book!! 21 Dec 2010
Format:Paperback
I have read, and enjoyed Julie Highmore's other books and was pleased to see she had written a new one. I love to save her book up for when I have a bit of 'me time' and I can read it all in one go! Absolutely loved this book, her best yet! I felt the whole story flowed and I could relate to some aspects of all the characters. I couldn't wait to move on to the next chapter and finish the book! She has maintained humour throughout all her books and she is able to move from decade to decade seamlessly. Can't wait for the next one...

I very much enjoyed this book. The characters are well crafted, the book is well written and the story is not entirely predictable. As the story unfolds there are a few little surprises. Ms Highmore clearly understands human emotions and is able to depict them well. I shall certainly be reading more of her books.
