A beautiful baby 24 Oct 2002
By Cies
Format:Audio CD
This is Vol 1 out of the three part series Birth of Soul produced by Ace/Kent. This series is interesting for everyone with a more than average interest in Soul music. As the title of the series says, it is about the Birth and not about the Predecessors of Soul. Or as Dave Godin in his excellent liner notes writes "So, if you have ever wondered about the birth of soul; when it took place, and just who was present ath the delivery, listen to this remarkable selection which so vividly shows what a bonny and lusty babe it was at that time, and how well it developed and grew!".
Godin's liner notes are very good (as all Ace/Kent linernotes) by giving you well written essential and relevant information about the artistst and tracks on this CD.
Not only the liner notes are very good but also the music compilation by Croasdell and Churchill is very good. It is an even balanced record with some DooWoop orientated numbers, Blues influenced ones, a few Gospel influenced ones. As this is an album about the Birth of Soul it is not really an album for the beginning soul collector, but more for those who want to know where the more matured sound of say, Motown and Stax, came from.

First of Five 23 Feb 2011
By Richard
Format:Audio CD
While not in chronlogical order this is simply a great series though hard at times to see the logic behind some of the songs eg Claudine Clark with Telephone Song-this was the B side of her 3rd Chancellor single.
The birth of Soul-or Uptown Soul-was defintely more interesting to what the music later became
