A good first attempt to cover the birds of South America in a format that is usable by the ornithologist, unfortunately this book is now starting to look a little dated in the light of the recent influx of more complete guides to the individual countries. The main fall down of this book is its failure to illustrate all of the species covered in the text, leaving you to rely on the adequate text. It now seems unlikely that this, once pioneering, series will ever be completed, which in itself is a shame, although it is unlikely to ever compete with the more thorough and cheaper guides that are now available.
