Nine very entertaining stories . . .

Eric Hansen presents nine evocative and humorous recollections from his travels over a 20 year period. This really is a very engaging read, every bit as much as Motoring with Mohammed (see review below).
The range of these 9 stories is tremendous, whether narrated in the first or the third person. Whether we're with Hansen as he drinks kava with the natives in the South Pacific; tends to the dying at Mother Teresa's hospice in Calcutta; receives lessons about Russian home cooking from an elderly emigre in a Bronx slum; sits in a Sacramento bar listening to an orthinologist/naturalist and his topless dancer companion; or revisits the old hotel in a backwater off the Great Barrier Reef after many years . . . the sheer ability of Hansen to tell a gripping story is pretty remarkable.
He can evoke scenes and personalities as well as Paul Theroux; yet without the cynical angle that comes with Theroux's writings. Hansen is an intrepid traveler that captures the revealing and unusual - his reportage is authentic while his humor is discreetly conveyed.
Why this is the first review on Amazon mystifies me; this is an author that should have wider exposure. The publisher of the book I picked up at the local library (Pantheon) is now the one listed above; perhaps that may explain why there are no previous reviews. Regardless, I highly recommend Eric Hansen for great adventure entertainment.

This is a collection of deeply researched magazine articles, most of them downright fascinating, and all of them showing remarkable skill at getting in, getting the facts, and reporting them brilliantly. The worst thing about the whole book is its title, which mistakenly suggests that it's trivial. it isn't.
