4.0 out of 5 stars Haunting and evocative novel 8 Jun 2001
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
Marketed to people who enjoyed Snow Falling on Cedars, this is a darker tale, although told with a similar confidence and style. A beautiful, haunting read.

4.0 out of 5 stars the bird artist 20 July 2009
Format:Paperback
A very fine book: Dialogue is excellent, the mother keeps repeating the same thing over and over, words to the effect 'please let's try to keep a semblance of normality' here, guilty people do this, the calm way in which she says she is going to kill herself, readers know she isn't joking, she is a woman on the edge. I felt Alaric's guilt, but the son's hate for Botho the lighthouse keeper, or his mother Alaric was not explosive; the father is right in thinking his son could have done more in objection to Alarics affair with Botho.

Plot has got enough conflict to make this a light read, the reader doesn't have to try too hard, I was compelled to follow the story. The adultery made me angry, the characters are sad and I empathised with margaret. Involving.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exquisitely simple storytelling 18 Oct 2006
Format:Paperback
Set in a remote community in Canada in the early part of the 20th Century this novel provides a wonderfully original and unpretentious insight into the lives of the town's inhabitants. The story provides some remarkable insights into the complexities of human nature and of how people living in isolated communities come to terms with the consequences of their actions, their passions and of the resulting tribulation. A superbly crafted novel.
