Thoroughly updated and incorporating the most important advances in the fast-growing field of cancer biology, The Biology of Cancer, Second Edition, maintains all of its hallmark features admired by students, instructors, researchers, and clinicians around the world.

The Biology of Cancer is a textbook for students studying the molecular and cellular bases of cancer at the undergraduate, graduate, and medical school levels. The principles of cancer biology are presented in an organized, cogent, and in-depth manner. The clarity of writing, supported by an extensive full-color art program and numerous pedagogical features, makes the book accessible and engaging. The information unfolds through the presentation of key experiments that give readers a sense of discovery and provide insights into the conceptual foundation underlying modern cancer biology.

The new Second Edition has been comprehensively revised and updated to include major advances in cancer biology over the past six years. Updates include current information on:

  • The tumor microenvironment
  • Metastatic dissemination
  • Tumor immunology
  • Cancer stem cells
  • The epithelial-mesenchymal transition
  • Multi-step tumorigenesis
  • Invasion and metastasis
  • Mutation of cancer cell genomes
  • Greatly expanded treatment of traditional therapy
  • Epigenetic contributions
  • MicroRNA involvement
  • The Warburg effect

Besides its value as a textbook, The Biology of Cancer is a useful reference for individuals working in biomedical laboratories and for clinical professionals.

Every copy of the book comes with an updated "Pathways in Human Cancer" poster and a DVD-ROM containing the book’s art program, a greatly expanded selection of movies, audio file mini-lectures, Supplementary Sidebars, and a Media Guide.

5.0 out of 5 stars Advised 23 April 2014

I have not had chance to read the book in its entirety. The chapters that I have raised are affordable and very clear. Both this book, as Bert Vogelstein & Kinzler, are works of reference for excellent support to the study of cancer.

2.0 out of 5 stars Probably the worst book I have ever bought 20 May 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
As a 3rd year medical student, I was told to use this book to study the biology of cancer. I could have used Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine instead, but Weinberg's textbook would fit better. And so I have bought it, I have used it for three months now, and I must say that I fully regret it.
There are indeed some good points about this book, but they are quickly overwhelmed by the bad points. Therefore, I will try to review everything that is either good or bad about this book.

Cover: The first thing one looks at when one gets a book is the cover. It looks really nice when one sees it online, but after buying it is another story. I can almost count the pixels of the picture. Also, the text on the backcover tells some things that I do not find as entirely true. "The principles of cancer biology are presented in an organized, cogent and in-depth manner. The clarity of writing, supported by an extensive full-color art program and numerous pedagogical features, makes the book accessible and engaging." In my opinion, this does not correspond to the truth, and I will explain why in the next sections. Finally, the most striking flaw in the cover: a book this size is paperback instead of hardcover!

Poster: Then one looks at poster included with the book. A nice feature, I must say, as it includes the various pathways involved in cancer, all in one scheme.

Table of Contents: Yes, the table of contents makes it appear that the book will cover all those subjects in an organized manner. Good thing is that by reading it you will a quick reference as to where you may find waht you want. However, even if you look at the index in the end it may be quite hard to find a detail you want to refresh.
