5.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good. Worth adding to the book shelf 17 Mar 2004
Format:Hardcover
The pictures are large in colour and accurate (nice close-ups). There are decent technical cutaways diagrams when required. The details cover the aspects of common modern bikes. This includes things like elastomer forks as well as newer oil forks and air (although it is a bit vague on air forks). I found the sections on derailleur adjustments and wheel bearing replacements to be very good, as these are the things I do on a regular basis. I also have "zinn and the art of mountain bike maintenance" which seems to get a lot of 5* reviews, but in my honest opinion, this book is better as it covers a smaller more popular range of components (maybe more UK specific?) The text is also more precise and the diagrams clearer. If you are concerned I would check them out first in a bookshop as they are two totally different books, but if you do decide buy this I don't think you'll be disappointed. It’s quite a good price too!

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for any cyclist 2 Oct 2000
Format:Hardcover
I bought this book and believe that anyone who is thinking seriously about cycling, purchase it. I have a few books on cycling and repairs etc. but this one is by far the best to date.
I'm female and I I didn't understand how to correct gears on my bike after a tube change, getting the wheels back on was nothing short of a nightmare. At the weekend, my friends bike had brake problems. She brought it round to my house and going through the book, stage by stage as suggested, we repaired the brakes. We even dismantled the handlebars in the process.
Ten out of ten, excellent book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for beginners 10 July 2000
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
I am a housewife who does a lot of her shopping by bicycle, but was rather ignorant about cycle technicalities. But no longer, as with the help of this excellent book I have now successfully repaired and serviced my three current bikes: a small folding bike, a racing bike and a ladies shopper bike. The pictures and text are very clear, it just takes a little more time to grasp all the new jargon if you are a complete beginner.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very useful, potentially money-saving book 5 July 2001
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
Having paid considerable money for a poor standard of repair to my bike, I decided to do something about it. This book fits the bill. The diagrams are fairly clear, although sometimes you have to look carefully to see exactly where the arrow is pointed. It has already saved me money, as I have repaired my rear wheel of my bike using its advice.
On the down side, in the early parts of the book there is a tendency to use jargon and terminology which is not explained until later in the text. I found the way around this was to skim read through the book first, before starting any specific job.
Overall, it is money well spent, and will save you money.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Useful Book 11 Nov 2003
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This is a useful book that tries to make bicycle maintenance easy. Nicely coloured diagrams and very useful checklists, together with an indication of the difficulty of the task helps the reader. I found that not all the terms were explained when they were first used. This meant reading on, aware that you didn't know what exactly was being discussed, until the term became clear later. This was a really strange feeling, and reduced the effectiveness of the book for me. That aside, there is still some value in the suggested routines and the tables indicating the tools and skill required in order to carry out a certain task.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is brilliant! 2 Nov 2000
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
I have recently taken up cycling with my friends, and bought this book to help with the looking-after of my bike. The book covers the main parts of a bike, with advice on how to fit and adjust brakes, gears and the many other parts of a seemingly daunting bike. With easy-to-follow instructions and step by-step-diagrams, this book is a must-have for the beginner, and even for the more advanced rider.
