First UK DVD release of this 1952 western from RKO Pictures. Kirk Douglas stars in this well-loved Western. Frontiersman Jim Deakins (Douglas) is travelling up the wide Missouri river with his best friend Boone Caudill (Dewey Martin) to trade with the Black Feet Indians. AT LONG LAST ON DVD 31 Aug 2011
I purchased a region free dvd player so that I could own and watch movies like this great American classic which are inexplicably not available on dvd here in the U.S. I've waited patiently for this Howard Hawks gem, and I am not dissappointed. I am not sure why others here have panned this Odeon release. No where has Odeon claimed this is a remastered film. It looks like a sixty year old film that was shot on good stock at a major studio and released in 1952. It is a little grainy, but so what. The picture is clear black and white with no pixillation. The film stays true to the A.B. Guthrie, Jr. novel it was based on, filmed on location in the Grand Teton National Park, and tells the story in a very entertaining fashion of an important period in the settling of the U.S. West.

Do not buy this Odeon DVD. The image quality is among the poorest I've seen, and looks as though it was copied off an old VHS tape.

Poor quality 11 Oct 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase
An enjoyable, old-fashioned movie is spoiled by a very poor picture quality. It's hardly worth your time. During this era of high definition, are we going to be subjected to a slew of cheap DVDs that haven't been remastered to extract the last few pennies from DVDs before they're consigned to the bin in favour of blu ray discs and downloads?

Odeon should be ashamed of themselves for having their name attached to such a poorly produced item.
