5.0 out of 5 stars A truly wonderful, beautifully illustrated book 28 July 1999
By A Customer
I originally ordered "The Big Big Sea" for my daughters but, having received it, read it in bed several nights on the trot! It is such an enchanting idea that your mother should whisk you out in the dead of night to paddle in the Big Big Sea and certainly one that most children can only dream of. The illustrations by Jennifer Eachus are in a class of their own and capture the magical quality of the story perfectly. This book had me yearning for my lost childhood, I wanted to be five again. Every now and then a special book comes along that you and your children must have....this one is definitely it!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book to read and re-read 22 Dec 2003
Like the first reviewer, I bought this book for my daughter, but was so entranced by the simplicity of the story and the profundity of the message that I bought a second copy to keep for future years - maybe the grandchildren - when the first is too dog-eared to survive. It is a wonderfully evocative story of a moonlit adventure to the seaside, which the young girl narrating knows she will remember for the rest of her life. It is also a powerful message to both parents and children of the important things in life, and is so good to read at the end of a hard, stressed day to remind oneself of why we bother. The illustrations match the story seamlessly. They are beautifully worked, again simple, with enough detail to satisfy demanding young children but enough simplicity to allow more imaginative older readers to savour the visual as well as literary stimulation and fill in the gaps of their own stories from young childhood.

5.0 out of 5 stars beautifully illustrated poetry 11 July 2001
By A Customer
This is an amazing story of a trip to the sea which makes you want to drag your kids out of bed and across the country to any beach just to experience the magic of moonlight paddles for yourself. The illustrations of Newcastle are fantastic - you can even see the Slieve Donard hotel and the clock tower at the old railway station. The language of the book is rhythmic and fluid - you can hear the wind blowing gently across the sand dunes at Murlough Bay. Every time I read this story to my kids I want to cry because it so perfectly captures those special moments which should be part of every childhood.

5.0 out of 5 stars astounding 25 Jan 2007
this has been one of my favourite books sinse i was fairly young, and i loved it becuase i lived near the sea for much of my life. now i am away from it i think i read it more than ever, it is so beautiful, and the pictures draw you in in such away that you cant help yourself running across the fields and the fences and away into the sea with the little girl and her mum.

it is truly an amazing book, and i would recomend it to anyone of any age, as you get so much from it each time you read it; the pictures alone are worthy of awe, and the story with them will put a lump in your throught and a tear in your eye. ive read it to children i have babysat and they love the pictures, and the idea of seeing the sea at night.

sorry that this is a bit of a babble, but truly, it is beautiful beyond words, and would be a treasure in anyones home.

5.0 out of 5 stars Never Judge a Book by its Cover? 14 July 2006
The cover of this book definitely makes a mockery of this old saying... My daughter, who is two, spotted it in a book shop and said 'Look Mummy, it's me!'... She insisted on holding it and without even reading it, I bought it... I too, as reviewers before me, had a lump in my throat reading it for the first time - and still get a goose pimples, even though its a firm favourite with Harrie and has been read hundreds of times. It really is pure poetry and I can't remember the last time a book affected my like this one. A must for all book shelves.. and yes, I too have another one to keep for later!

5.0 out of 5 stars A simple and touching tale 16 Feb 2011
I bought this on the reviews mentioned here, and I wasn't let down. It's a simple tale, though extremely beautiful in its simplicity and reminds me of what it means to be a child from the child's point of view. It has a wonderful still quality that stays with me. I have only spotted this special quality in two other childrens books: The little beaver and the echo & The kissing hand. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfection 12 Feb 2009
When my beautiful daughter was about two years old, I was wandering around Waterstones looking for a suitable book as a present. I picked up The Big Big Sea and read through it. A lump in my throat the size of a cricket ball, and tears rolling down my cheeks. The chap at the checkout must have thought I was suffering from something. That evening I showed it to my wife, who had the same reaction.

It's simply the most perfect evocation imaginable of the relationship between a young girl and her mother. A must for every parent.

(*We* like it, but the daughter's never shown the slightest interest. Ho hum.)

4.0 out of 5 stars great drawings, nice story
A very enjoyable read with a lovely atmosphere and nice drawings. My 4-year old probably would have liked a little more story, but still likes the drawings!
