It's quite bulky and took a few attempts to set it up as if not done correctly the slightest move sets it off, but overall it is a good live trap. I think it would be better if it could set up not to close so the wild rat can get used to it over a period of days, then when they're not expecting it you can set it up to catch them.
It's designed so you cannot get bitten and works well, and needs to be checked daily but I found I could attach a water bottle on the side of it.
Great for catching escaped pets as I found out, especally when it's in a huge pet store. The rat was caught first time and was unharmed.

we recently bought an old property which has a stream running through the garden,we noticed a family of rats had also moved in on the bank of the stream,at first we tolerated them but they were getting closer to the house in their quest for food so something had to give.we could have put poison down but decided to try a different approach...enter the big cheese live rat trap.we have used the trap for 1 week and have caught 3 rats,they seem to like fruit cake!we have released them in a secluded woods well away from other houses,so all's well that ends well.

Overall, this is a good simple design for the job. Avoid any products designed to kill them as you may end up with a poisoned or maimed rat in a wall space where he cannot be removed.
I think some users may have had problems only because this is a mass produced item eg sticky doors, stiff trigger bait plate, etc... can usually be fixed with some patience.
I made 2 useful modifications:
1. where the 2 trigger rods meet, bend the top door rod (at approx 10mm from the end) slightly to the left - instead of leaving it vertical . This makes it easier to set and not so sensitive.
2. place 2 bricks on top of the cage to avoid triggering in case the rat brushes against the cage
When you get him, let him go into a field where he can make a tasty meal for an owl.

Works on birds, not rats
The cage is nice and sturdy but the rats in my garden are too wary to go near it. Robins, on the other hand, are happy to hop in and set off the trap. Read more

Useless
Rats too clever for this product. In the morning the bait is gone but door open and no rat. Or door closed but no rat. Way too tricky to get the door to stay open. Read more

caught in a trap
I purchased this product recently and the food items i left in the trap were taken without the trap going off. Going on this failure i wouldnt recommend this product.
