Not a bad reference 7 Jun 2007
Format:Paperback
I am an proficient level Spanish speaker and am familiar with many of the expressions in this book, but I still find it useful. It is well organised and provides clear examples of how the idioms are used, including highlighting differences between US and UK English. No, it doesn't include ALL the idioms you will encounter in the Spanish language, but it is certainly a good starting point, especially given the price.

I am in my third year studying Spanish at evening class and am about to sit the AS level; Spanish like any language has a lot of idiomatic expressions so I thought this book sounded ideal. However, I have been very disappointed. We are using a fairly standard AS/A2 textbook in our class which contains a lot of topical articles, many taken from newspapers and periodicals, but the colloquiallisms and idioms used in the textbook just don't seem to feature in the The Big Red Book of Spanish Idioms. It is more the exception than the rule to look something up in this book and find it there. Obviously with over 4,000 Spanish idioms it must cover a lot, so I'm rather puzzled as to why I've not found it helpful - what level is it aimed at I wonder? Possibly higher than A level? Although it is reasonably priced, I have more or less given up trying to use it now and would not recommend it for AS level study.

This is an interesting book, both informative and (in its own way) entertaining. However, as a Kindle purchaser, my main issue with this (and with many Kindle purchases in fact) is that very little effort has been made in trying to convert this to Kindle. There is no ability to flick between chapters (i.e. go to sayings beginning with the letter A, B, C, D etc) and therefore all you can do is use the paddles to go through the book one page at a time. It is consequently highly impractical to use as a reference tool as it takes you an age to get to the correct page that would have the relevant translation for your needs at that moment. This means that I can only use this book for curious browsing of new phrases, which is not what I was hoping for when I originally downloaded it...
