In addition to the charity aspect, I love the variety in this book. Fiction, nonfiction and poetry combine to create an entertaining and inspirational read. The Big Book of Hope presents the reader with a wide range of characters that we can identify or empathise with; from children trying to make sense of the world, to worried parents dealing with their responsibilities and a grieving man trying to find love after the death of his wife. Thankfully, the theme of hope is handled with compassion, wit and sensuality, and without cliché. As a result, there is something for everyone to enjoy.
Some of my favourite quotes:
"Oh, Calloway Hart, you can no more capture your thoughts than the shore can capture the waves." (Alex Barclay, p20, "Calloway Hart and the Town of Sable Forge")
"On black teenage days I'd meander along, reading on the hoof, tripping over dog leads, stumbling over cracks in the pavement, my head buried in the book." (Sarah Webb, p404, "Hope and JK Rowling")
"She was like that fish, his darling wife. Darting through his life like a flash of silver. She had lifted him up from the riverbed, made him light. Now his feet feel so heavy he wants to sink down to the bottom, never to rise again." (Noelle Harrison, p208, "At the Coalface")
"Where love is deep, much will be accomplished." (Ivy Bannister, p12, "Hope")
