2.0 out of 5 stars very disappointing 11 April 2005
Firstly, this book contains mainly information about different sorts of hens, i.e. different breeds. Secondly it has loads of recipes. The actual stuff I wanted, i.e. info on keeping hens was the odd little brief bit here and there stuck randomly inbetween the other two mentioned areas. If you put all the info together in one place it wouldn't amount to much. What there was was good, but considering the price, it was too brief and a disappointment, and the act of reading it was a letdown because it is so broken up, you can't get stuck into reading about keeping hens, without suddenly reading about meringues and then about yet another breed on hen which means nothing to me yet because I'm still trying to learn about them. Buy Storeys guide for 6 quid less.

For anyone thinking of starting with a few hens, or anyone who already has some hens, this is one of the best books. I was lent it by a friend, but liked it so much that I had to have my own copy. The author strikes just the right note for the amateur -- in both senses of the word -- chicken keeper; she tells you all you need to know and does not overwhelm you with the more technical/commercial stuff which you don't need. She also manages to convey the delight and affection which every hen keeper I have ever met feels for their hens. Add to that some charming pictures and excellent recipes -- all in all, the perfect combination.

5.0 out of 5 stars fantastic!! 5 Sep 2003

Finally a book about keeping hens that doesn't assume you want to keep 400 hens in battery cages!

Absolutely beautiful book, looks just like a 1950s school text book outside, well bound and sturdy, wonderful lively pictures inside, great personalised info about hens, and up to date sources for products and info. Kind, caring advice without being at all preachy, and while staying practical.

If you want to keep a few hens around, for eggs or just for enjoyment, this is the perfect book. It's just chock full of the info that's missing from most books - personalities, behaviour, and best of all, actual advice about how hens really get along in your garden. Wonderful!!!

If you want to keep hens in your garden and can only buy one book this is the one to buy. I love this book - its a book for reading again and again or just for dipping into for information and recipes. The pictures are wonderful and the book is worth buying for them alone. However, the practicalities of keeping hens in your garden are dealt with in such a way that this book would be good for either a beginner or an experienced keeper. If you know anyone who loves hens this book would make a fantastic gift.

By Yvonne
Francine has compiled a beautiful book celebrating the finer points of the garden hen. The book has an unusual layout with chapters for each calendar month. Every month a particular aspect of chicken husbandry is tackled, the emphasis always being on keeping chickens on a small scale in the garden, for the interest and the eggs they provide! Each month two different breeds of chicken are introduced and the reader is given a helpful list of 'things to do' relating to the time of year. A mouthwatering recipe, to tempt you to use all those fabulous fresh eggs, concludes every chapter. Throughout the book there are some lovely photographs of chickens (mostly Francine's own) in cottage garden settings. Francine has succeeded in producing a book that is both highly informative and a real pleasure to read. Her enthusiasm for both hens and gardening is obvious. Even the quality of the cream coloured pages is luxurious! I love this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice but pricey 23 Nov 2003
A nicely written book, and a nice insight into small flock keeping, lots of good tips but very overpriced in comparison to other books that do a better job,(storeys guide to raising chickens for example) would have given it more stars had it cost around []

This is a lovely book! I've read just about every "how to" poultry book (health, housing, feeding, etc etc!), books about different breeds, etc. This is one of my very favorite books about chickens.

I would describe this as a gracious book. It has absolutely beautiful photographs and charming small line drawings. One thing I love about the photographs is that some of them actually give you a good idea about the relative size of various breeds (when I visited my first poultry show I was astonished that all the books I'd read hadn't conveyed how massive some breeds really are). The limited number of photos in this book are the highest quality in any chicken book I've read. The book itself is very handsome-- it is hardbound with a textured cloth cover that has a wonderful "feel". In short, everything about this book is a pleasure. It would be a wonderful gift for the person who has a backyard flock of pet hens.

Just be aware that this is NOT a how-to book. There are other far more detailed sources for information about chicken health, housing, breeds, etc. Rather than being a practical book, this is a pleasure read, for those who just enjoy reading about chickens, love the idea of raising a bit of their family's food, enjoy learning about the personalities and behavior of their own chickens, etc.. (It definitely is not the right book for would-be chicken farmers who want to raise chickens on a large scale).

The author shares information she has gleaned from maintaining her own small flock, information about 24 breeds which she suggests are suitable for small flock owners, etc. It is organized as a sort of "year with chickens"-- each month has a list of chicken tasks to remember, a special recipe, etc.
