An excellent read

The Big Argument is a response to the arguments used by atheists to try to defend their position. As I have read much atheist literature, I am very aware of their basic arguments, which boil down to the claim that evolutionism puts God out of a job, the existence of evil, and the putative problems with the Bible. All of these arguments are dealt with, in my opinion, fairly well in this 403 page fine print book. The advantage of this work is, 24 scientists, professors, and professional writers each deal with their area of expertise. As a result, the book is a well written, authoritative well thought out summary of the topic focused on in each chapter. This scholarly work was edited by the highly successful author, John Aston, to be assessable to the educated layman. The 18 Ph.D's included cover, not only the science, but the theological issues as well. This collection of writings will be of interest to, not only scientists, but anyone interested in intelligent design, creationism, evolution, theology, and science in general. One fact that surprised me was that there are only 24 well established dinosaur genera. I had assumed that many more than this existed. Also, the information in the section on the immune system was new to me. No gradual progression of the immune system exists in the natural world (and I checked the references given to support this claim). Several very different types exist, but all are enormously complex.

A headache

My parents, who are devout Christians, bought this book for me for my birthday. I'm an atheist, and I'm well versed in the popular "new atheist" literature as well as being a bit of an armchair science nerd. I subscribe to Scientific American and love reading books on physics, cosmology, evolution, primatology, sociology, and just about any other scientific field you can think of.
If I had a nickle for every logical fallacy and scientifically ignorant statement in this book, I could have paid my parents back for it many times over. The smart-sounding rhetoric will surely be persuasive to some (namely, those with a weak grasp of logical argumentation and an ignorance of modern science), but the conflation of Biblical Creationism with science, the relentless straw-man representations of skeptical arguments, and the rehashed arguments that have been around since the days of C.S. Lewis make for a book that offers nothing any self-respecting skeptic hasn't seen a hundred times. To say I found this book unpersuasive would be the understatement of the century. It re-affirmed many of my beliefs, including my belief that Christian apologists don't actually understand the arguments skeptics have been presenting to them for the last few hundred years. Does God exist? Maybe, but this book sure does a lousy job of proving it.
For the record, I think there are much better books by Christians apologists, such as The Reason For God by Tim Keller and The Language of God by Francis Collins. I didn't find those books persuasive either, but they were much less exasperating to read and at least stuck to more philosophical angles rather than trying to discredit every major field of modern science in one fell swoop.

Thought Provoking Evidence

I particularly liked the introductory story about Dr. Ben Carson's amazing answer to prayer in surgery. Dr. Carson is a world famous Pediatric Neurosurgeon at John Hopkins. In the story he tells how God intervened to save the life of one of his patients. This is not the only time this has happened for Dr. Ben Carson. He mentions several cases of amazing answers to prayer in his other books.

Think Big: Unleashing Your Potential for Excellence
It is one thing to believe in a Supreme Being, it is entirely another to believe in a loving, caring Supreme Being. Ben Carson's story reminded me that of that important fact!
I should note several other excellent scholars that have contributed to this fine book.

Do yourself a favor and pick up a copy to read.
