These films based on the lives of characters from the Bible are very professionally made and star well-known actors including Ben Kingsley as Moses (and Potiphar), Richard Harris as Abraham and Nathaniel Parker as King David. In general they are faithful to, and respectful of, the biblical originals. Of course, scenes and dialogue are added for dramatic effect but there is no attempt to change the message of the stories or impose a modern worldview. I'm sure purists could find plenty of faults, but I enjoyed the films and was happy to overlook a little 'story-telling'. They really made the Old Testament come alive for me, breathing new life into familiar stories; Abraham and Joseph were particularly good.
However I found Samson and Delilah dull and the life-story of Jesus was rather odd. The film-makers were obviously trying to find a different angle than the usual 'gentle Jesus, meek and mild', but instead they chose to make him flippant and jokey, what we in Ireland call 'a bit of a messer'. They also overplayed his human nature; portraying him as quite unsure of his calling, and adding suggestions of a romantic bond with Mary Magdalene. I appreciated what they were trying to do, but it didn't really work for me. I found
Miracle Maker [DVD] [2000], to be a more engaging version of the Life of Jesus.
There is also a full box set of these Bible stories
The Complete Bible Box Set [2007] [DVD] or a second box set of 7
The Bible - Collection 2 [2005] [DVD] or the films can be bought individually. I would particularly recommend
The Bible - Apocalypsis Revelation [2002] [DVD] (again starring Limerick actor Richard Harris, in one of his last film roles) and
The Bible - Esther [1999] [DVD].
