This is incredible. For me this is music that touches my heart and my soul. It's mature way beyond the bands years.

It is incredibly powerful in both sound and emotion. It sure is a multi layered wall of sound as others have said. And just when you think it couldn't get more brutal or busy it does. You thought your ears were chock full of noise - oh no. It builds and builds and builds. You get pummelled man. This is truly ferocious. It squeezes the breath from your body like some bloater sat on your chest. How these guys still get great melodies across in such a racket defies explanation. And then you're brought back to reality with the gentle haunting stuff.

When I first bought this I played the intro then track 2 and just couldn't believe what I was hearing. I loved it staright off the bat and how many bands from this end of the spectrum can you say that about? And ten minutes or so later when it was finished I really could have laughed or cried. I'd lost my bearings. What an effect this will have on you. I had to skip back and play it again to make sure it was still there. I then I did it again. Listen, I have never bought an album and done this before. I didn't know what I was doing. You try it.

So half a dozen Swedish guys who don't see the sun for 6 months make music. It's no surprise it sounds like this. I need to move.

Cult Of Luna are quite simply one of the most crushingly heavy bands in existence today. Forget Sunn 0))), forget any Death Metal bands, the noise put out by these Swedes will simply annihilate anything in its way. And they manage to do it without resorting to all out speed to increase the intensity of their sonic assault; their music rarely exceeds the mid-paced. However, their natural understanding of the dynamics of sound means that they don’t need to. These guys know how to write extreme music and they know how to do it properly. As the opening intro track ‘Inside Fort Mead’ drones into life, you may be forgiven for thinking that you’d put on something by one of the Southern Lord drone-doom bands like Khanate or Boris, but when the first track proper ‘Receiver’ kicks into life, you get a better idea of what Cult Of Luna are all about. Grinding distorted riffs with hardcore-esque gruff shouted vocals, before breaking down into a quieter section with clean guitar work, there is a lot of light and shade on this record. It’s hard to pick a stand-out track as they’re all so impressive, but my personal favourite by a slight margin is ‘The Watchtower’. If you’re a fan of bands like Neurosis or Isis, both of who sound not too dissimilar to Cult Of Luna, I’d have no hesitation in recommending that you check them out, you’ll like them a lot. For anyone else who’s looking for something ultra-heavy, but with a bit more subtlety than most, you could do a great deal worse than this.

There is very little that I can say that can describe the sheer brilliance of this album. It is one of a very small genre of music that includes Isis (another amazing band, with whom CoL recently toured) and Neurosis. The first thing that strikes you about this album is how full and real it sounds. Many 'heavy' bands consider bad production and tinny drums to add to the effect of the music, but it does nothing for me. Cult of Luna on the other hand have produced the music to the extent that it sounds as though you are being enveloped in sound. The layered guitars give a brilliantly thick and astoundingly heavy sound which is particularly noticable on tracks such as 'Circle', and the use of string sections such as cellos and violins gives it a wonderful orchestral feel. This also lends it a very foreboding atmosphere, complemented perfectly by the guitar work.
Every single track on this album is a standout track which makes it very difficult to name particular songs but my personal favourites are 'Circle' and 'The Watchtower'. The true majesty of this band (and I do not use the term lightly)is their ability to slow the music down and in doing so allow the wall of noise produced to wash over you. The vocals, although hardcore, perfectly complement the music itself. They may not be to everyone's tastes but I urge you to give it a listen. You may surprise yourself!
There is really nothing bad I can say about this album so this leaves me with nothing more to say than sit back, relax, and enjoy. Prepare yourself for the ride of your life. Dive In!

cult of luna can make metal reach out and hug you, thats some trick,id like to see paul daniels do that, they have songs that range from 8 minutes to 12 minutes long and they take plenty of emotions and mix them to bring you some monsterous songs, they run on the same road as neurosis if im honest, all soothing one minute all angry the next while never playing fast as such but i feel cult of luna considering their young ages deserve their own plaudits as they rock in a more extreme way than neurosis, this is a sublime album, one to relax too, hang on,maybe not

Firstly you have to buy this CD. It defines an new genre in metal currently occupied by the likes of ISIS and has set the pace for others to follow. Art Metal does not have a massive following at the moment but I strongly suspect this album will change that. The sheer powerful ambience this album creates is staggering and really draws you into the music. The sheer weight and deep sound of the guitars rival that of anything I've heard before. It may not be full of ripping solos and riffs but I promise you you'll be trying to play this on your own guitar (air or real) with the gain cranked well up.
Ok so you'll have to read the lyrics in the sleeve to follow them but trust me it's worth it. The lyrics are deep, dark and poetically moving. When delivered with the force and style of Johannes Persson the effect is awesome. Their first album had all the ingredients but The Beyond pulls it all together with apocolyptic strength. Tracks like The Watchtower, Circle & Deliverance progressively build up into such a controlled but agressive climax you won't know what hit you. Even if you're not a fan of this type of metal (I'm an "old skool" metal head for example) you must buy this CD to understand what this genre of Art Metal is all about. It's been in my CD player now since it came out and will stay there for a while! Definitely in my top 10 of ALL TIME!!!
