Good wine buying in the supermarket 7 Dec 2010

This book The Best Wines in the Supermarkets 2011: My Top Wines Selected for Character and Style is a fantastic help to those of us who don't know much about wine and tend to buy in supermarkets. One thing buying what you know in the supermarket you know, but what if you are faced with a different shop? Just look up the appropriate pages! This is where I find this book so helpful - as well as for trying new ideas.

And I love the way he writes: saying of the Marks & Spencer Renato Ratti that it has 'an endearing riverbank name', and describing a Beaujolais he likes as a 'spiffing purple rhubarb and raspberry bouncer'.

Altogether an excellent book. I buy lots and give them to my friends!

This is a most useful little book giving as it does wines from across the supermarket spectrum, and allowing comparisons to be made not only on quality but on value for money. Recommended.

A great investment 11 May 2011

I had the paper version of the 2010 edition and found it really useful but this year I got the kindle version instead. This is even better, as I now carry it round everywhere via my phone's kindle app and so can check out any supermarket's stock on the spot if I happen to come across a supermarket while out and about at which I would not usually shop.. The book costs about the price of a cheap bottle of wine and will prevent you from ever purchasing a nasty bottle again. I haven't had a bad wine since I got the book. His reviews are short, to the point, and accurate. Very highly recommended.

This was interesting to dip into and compare with our usual wine choices. However, many of the top-rated wines were not on the shelves at all when we looked in TESCO. Read more

Disappointing

The author doesn't seem to have the experience/confidence of some other wine writers. It's also a bit of a let-down that he admits that he wasn't invited to some wine tastings. Read more
