Tom Mathews has been drawing cartoons in Irish magazines and
newspapers since the 1980s. This is his second collection,
introduced by his fan Pauline McLynn (Father Ted,
Bremner,Bird and Fortune).
His cartoons generally take the form of a single
panel containing a joke, which can be simple or
complex-but always witty.
His humour is slightly "student-y" with repeated themes
being Literary Modernism, rock music, and pubs. There is a
Gary Larson-like
fascination with animals. Some of the cartoons occur
by themes (cowboys, married couples, elephants). There is a use
of puns that would be irritating in the hands of a lesser
cartoonist, but in Mathews' hands work brilliantly (see the
"Mobile Phone" gag on the book's cover).
Some of the humour may be lost on readers from outside
Ireland (i.e. the pun based on the fact that the word "jam" is
"subh" in Irish Gaelic) but generally I believe the
British,American or Australian cartoon fan would enjoy this book too.
So if you fancy a dip into a world of movie-going crabs,
swearing wine-glasses and "difficult" (literally) second albums,
this is worth a look.
