Spandau Ballet - Once More

Biography

To Cut A Long Story Short

The first time that most Londoners heard the words Spandau Ballet was on the London Weekend Television arts programme Twentieth Century Box, in May 1980. Presented by Danny Baker, Twentieth Century Box was the place you went to for your youth culture fix.

And Baker’s programme was devoted to a new cult, The Cult With No Name, a bunch of soul boys and girls, disaffected art… Read more in Amazon's Spandau Ballet Store

Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

In the days when boy bands played their own instruments, Spandau Ballet--a bunch of pretty boys from north London with kilts, shoulder pads, bad 1980s hair, eyeliner and unmistakable good looks--caused quite a stir and soon had both major record labels and teenage girls monitoring their every move. Major-league players among the New Romantic movement, the five piece lived the high life and churned out hit after hit between 1980 and 1986. This compilation features pretty much all of their offerings ("Gold", "True", "Lifeline", "Highly Strung")--some more memorable than others. Gold's sleeve notes boldly proclaim "...this is where it all began. Club culture, endless nocturnal adventures, white boys high on soul and funk-making electric dance music which moves the city." It's hard to imagine music like this doing that now--on the cover they look like a bunch of old guys in polo necks--but it was the 80s. --Ronita Dutta

An absolutely essential part of anyone's music collection, this CD is bound to get you singing, dancing around the room and feeling at times happy and elated and at other times meloncholy. There are no bad tracks on this collection and for some it will evoke fond memeories of the 80's, for others it may help them appreciate why that decade was so special musically.

This is the band at it's best, with the golden voice of Tony Hadley evoking such emotions. For me, although, it is a little reflective in it's tone and lyrics 'Through the Barricades' can and should be played over and over again, never losing it's ability to get you 'just there'.

If you do not own this collection of songs you NEED to!!

Truely a classic album, this collection of Spandau Ballets Greatest hits has it all. The incredible voice of Tony Hadley at his greatest, combined with the talents of the whole band creates a sound which we all picture as classic 80's. How many of you can say that Gold and Through the Barricades didn't touch you back then? Well this CD brings it all back. An absolute must buy!

Like many, I was pleasantly surprised when the band reformed a couple of years back. I purchased this collection more for the nostalgia of the DVD than the cd & put it in the machine with much anticipation. Unfortunately a minute into Gold the sound quality drops & doesn't return until towards the end of the song. As no other reviewer has mentioned this, I'm presuming I've just got a dud copy.
The poor quality of the DVD aside, there's no denying that these guys are one of the top bands of the 80's. It's a shame they weren't as big in NZ as they were back home.

Dated but still good Spandau Ballet
Spandau Ballet came out after the best of British pop music in the 90's. Therefore their task was sort of difficult - take this observation in context - they had prior to their... Read more
