Maggie Bell fans will be pleased with this double set of CD and DVD. After all these years, Maggie, one of rock's best female vocalists finally gets a well-earned retrospective. The CD contains 12 songs , 7 tracks of which are from her 2 studio albums from 1974-1975, which represent some of her best work. Most fans will already have these on the QUEEN OF THE NIGHT and SUICIDE SAL albums, but the sound is remastered and as clear as could be. Favorites like CADDO QUEEN, AS THE YEARS GO PASSING BY , and rockers WISHING WELL and COMING ON STRONG have long been classics, and definitely merit inclusion. They did leave off the amazing QUEEN OF THE NIGHT, certainly one of her best known titles. You do get the non-LP NO MEAN CITY, which was the Theme To " Taggart" , a BBC series, and this song was a hit in England. There are 4 live cuts, 3 with her band MIDNIGHT FLYER, from 1981, including the non-LP song DANGER MONEY, a magnificent rocker capturing Maggie at a great period of her career. The last song is a live version of The Staple Singers RESPECT YOURSELF, with Maggie's current band, THE BRITISH BLUES QUINTET. As this is already on their CD, and is a long song, it would have been much better to have included some true rarities. There have been many releases of Maggie's vintage live concerts on CD. It would be very advantageous for Angel Air Records to release a compilation of Maggie's studio work that has never made it onto CD, like non-LP singles like HAZELL and HOLD ME [ with B.A. Robertson ], both of which her hits in the UK , but not included on this CD. Maggie has many A&B sides, plus rare tracks that would make an amazing CD of studio rarities.
The DVD is a live concert from Montreux in 1981 of Maggie and her band MIDNIGHT FLYER. This is a great show, with Maggie at the top of her game. Most of the songs are full-out rockers, and they come non-stop at the beginning of the show. MIDNIGHT FLYER was made up of younger musicians, and the sound here is not unlike a female AC/DC with Maggie on vocals. They do quite a few stormburning rockers that are not on their one and only album. It's essential to have and to see a full concert of Maggie . After the rockers, the pace slows down to a good balance with blues songs, like PENICILLIN BLUES, the only song dating back to STONE THE CROWS, plus appearances by legendary bluesmen TAJ MAHAL and ALBERT COLLINS. Being that this DVD is available seperately also, it is a real bonus to buy this BEST OF MAGGIE BELL CD/DVD package together. Concert footage of Maggie are quite rare, so having a full show from 1981, with Maggie in top form is a real gift to have.
