Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Sonny Bono was a record-biz vet by the time he hooked up with a teenaged female singer named Cher. After a 1963 flop under the name Caesar and Cleo, the pair clicked with "I Got You Babe", a leap onto the folk-rock bandwagon that made them America's favourite pseudohippies for a brief moment. Cher's less-than-dulcet tones never sounded better than when placed next to Sonny's nasal croak. As for Sonny himself, his solo protest work--including "Laugh at Me", later covered by Mott the Hoople --is excerpted here. There are no words. --Rickey Wright

This collection brings together the changes in technique that Sonny Bono strived for in order to achieve perfection and inovation. It proves that they were fare more than "I Got You Babe". Heavily influenced by Phil Spector, we hear the big backing, particularly evident on "What Now My Love" and "Living For You". Highlights of the album atre "The Beat Goes On", a successful single, and "Love Don't Come" which although a b side, shows real thought in lyric writing typical of the sixties. Thankfully, it includes no less than 4 tracks from the debut album "Look At Us" which to this day stands the test of time. "Just You" a prime example. Midway in their sixties career, Bono tried to impress upon the listener, their attitude to revolution and conventionality. This is demonstrated in "The Revolution Kind", a Sonny solo, and "But You're Mine". Both carrying virtually the same rhythm and backing track, but oh so pop in it's technique. If ever there was a track to make the artist cringe in later years, it must be the b side of "But You're Mine", the aptly titled "hello". This features Bono attempting, not too successfully, piano chords, but very successfully, embarrassing Cher into uttering dialogue that is tear inducing to say the least. If you a an affeciado of the sixties, and you are looking to include in your collection an album that totally encapsulates that period, look no further..it is ideal. I must admit to being a bit of a Sonny & Cher fan..if only for the effort that Sonny Bono obviously put into his craft, but that aside, take my word for it, you will not be disappointed with this album.

Magical album 20 Mar 2007
Format:Audio CD
I recommend this album most strongly. It is like a breath of fresh air in comparison with many of the world weary, jaded and manufactured acts and albums of today.

The album has an air of winsome innocence, naivety and hope about it and the production sounds are very reminiscent of Phil Spector. The album captures a period of pure sixties magical pop creativity. Right form the opening track of' Baby Please Don't Go', the title track itself `The Beat Goes on' which was allegedly sang at Sonny Bono's funeral to the evergreen `I Got You Babe', this album is filled with pop gems, pure sixties magic. Great to hear them again.

By Peter Durward Harris #1 HALL OF FAME TOP 10 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
This collection contains all of Sonny's important British and American hits (with and without Cher) from 1964 to 1967, although some minor hits are missing. The classic hits here are I got you babe (number one in Britain and America), Laugh at me (a Sonny solo), Just you, Baby don't go, What now my love, Little man (number one in several European countries) and The beat goes on. There are many other wonderful songs including Sing c'est la vie, which was number one in Belgium but didn't chart at all (maybe wasn't released) in Britain or America.

Cher's solo hits from the sixties are omitted from this collection - you must buy either a separate Cher collection, or a more comprehensive Sonny and Cher collection to obtain those. For a comprehensive collection of the music of Sonny and Cher, buy the European double CD Singles plus, which contains all of Sonny and Cher's hits, separately and together, up to 1974. It comes at a price but if you're only interested in the early part of Cher's career, you won't need a separate Cher compilation.

If you are looking primarily for Sonny and Cher's duets and aren't bothered about the absence of Cher's solo hits, this is a great single CD.
