I'm so glad I bought this CD.
As you may know, Richard Tauber was an Austrian tenor, acclaimed as one of the greatest singers of the 20th century. I've heard it said that his heart felt every word he sang, describing the emotional feeling that Tauber's voice evoked. His voice seemed to flow from the quietest whisper to all the might of his tremendously powerful tenor. This collection of remastered recordings contains most his more popular songs.
Tauber's special forte was love songs and the set includes his classic 'Long Ago And Far Away,' possibly one of the most beautiful love songs I know. Another song I love is 'Girls Were Made To Love And Kiss', where there is a quiet section of Tauber's high, soft tenor. Other tracks include:
You Are My Heart's Delight,
My Heart And I
We'll Gather Lilacs
Pedro The Fisherman
Lover Come Back To Me
One Day When We Were Young
Vienna, City Of My Dreams
Sylvia
..........and many others.
All of the recordings are original, digitally remastered. Sadly, the transfers are not brilliant - too much treble producing a rather "tinny" quality. Also, I suspect that the source material was not in the mint condition it should have been. So only 4 Stars, I'm afraid. They've used his later tracks, 1936 - 1947, as they benefit from better recording techniques.
In many ways, Tauber's records - and he made over 700! - bridged the gap between classical and popular music. Almost the original 'crossover' artist, the Russell Watson of his day. One of my favourite tracks on this set is 'My Heart and I' and this song characterizes both his style and his passionate love-affair with his music.
This is a lovely album and a nostalgic delight. Listen and enjoy - old-fashioned, sentimental love-songs, which surely have a place in every heart.
