Book Description

This Prestwick House Literary Touchstone Classic™™ includes a glossary and reader’s notes to help the modern reader contend with Poe'’s allusions and complicated vocabulary.

Edgar Allan Poe's name conjures up thoughts of hearts beating long after their owners are dead, of disease and plague amid wealth, of love that extends beyond the grave, and of black ravens who utter only one word. The richness of Poe’s writing, however, includes much more than horror, loss, and death.

Alive with hypnotic sounds and mesmerizing rhythms, his poetry captures both the splendor and devastation of love, life, and death. His stories teem with irony and black humor, in addition to plot twists and surprise endings. Living by their own rules and charged with passion, Poe’s characters are instantly recognizable — —even though we may be appalled by their actions, we understand their motivations.

The thirty-three selections in The Best of Poe highlight his unique qualities. Discover for yourself the mysterious allure and genius of Edgar Allan Poe, who remains one of America’s most popular and important authors, even more than 150 years after his death.

More About the Author

Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston in 1809, the son of itinerant actors who left him an orphan in 1811. He became a ward of Richmond merchant John Allan and from 1815 to 1820 lived with the family in London. Upon his return, Poe received schooling in Richmond before attending the University of Virginia for a year. In 1827, he clashed with Allan and left for Boston, where he joined the army and published a slender volume, Tamerlane and Other Poems. He later attended the US Military Academy until his dismissal in 1831. The poet moved to Baltimore and began writing for magazines in 1832: three years later he secured a position with the Southern Literary Messenger in Richmond and married his cousin, Virginia Clemm. Relocating in New York, Poe endured great hardship but in 1838 published his only novel, The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym. In October 1849, he collapsed in Baltimore and died in hospital.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Collection. 4 Jan. 2012

Nice collection of Poe's works. It's mostly his more popular works but I'm sure one can find several favorites among them. Would have given it 5 stars if not for the very small print. PS The Kindle edition is very nice also.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic! 17 Mar. 2009
By Jason Tubbs - Published on

Poe is one of my favorites. I have much of The Tell-Tale Heart committed to memory. The Raven is another that sticks with me. There are few authors that have written in his style. One that comes to mind is R.A. Knowlton in one of his short stories about the painting Guernica by Picasso.

This collection of writings of Poe is a must read!

5.0 out of 5 stars I Love This!!! 5 Sept. 2013

This little collection is 100% perfect! It has everything you need to understand! For example.... If you read "The Cask of Amontillado" and you don't know what the Latin says... Well there's a part in the back of the book that tells you all you need to know. Also the many difficult words that Mr. Poe uses can be defined in the back of the book.... Really great help.

5.0 out of 5 stars How about 1/2 stars? 26 Oct. 2013

Wish they had 1/2 stars as I would probably give this one 4 1/2 stars. I reserve
5 for very few books; things like Huck Finn.
Poe was definitely one of the great American writers. A bit repetitive from story
to story and he seemed to love to use fancy words incessantly just for the sake
of it at times.
But he can sure weave a tale and draw you in and terrorize you!
