5.0 out of 5 stars Dick at Decca 20 Nov 2008
By C. FULLER TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
This 23 song compilation was released 10 years ago and was quite rightly named "The Very Best of Dick Haymes". There are 19 solo songs and 4 with other performers eg The Andrews Sisters on "My Sin" and Helen Forrest on the final 3 songs in the compilation.
Here you will find the definitive 1940s versions of both "Laura" and "Stella by Starlight". And, the original workings of both "It Might as Well be Spring" and "The More I See You" from 2 of his most popular musicals "State Fair" and "Diamond Horseshoe". The voice is at its peak in every song and this surely confirms his claim to the title of "Balladeer Supreme".
The sound quality is excellent and the running time just under 70 minutes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Benchmark recordings from Dick Haymes... 18 Aug 2012
By C. FULLER TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
This single CD comprises what many say are Dick Haymes finest post Decca recordings. I agree with that. Here you will find firstly Rain or Shine followed by Moondreams and lovingly transferred to CD under the watchful eye of Alan Dell the man who was responsible for getting Dick back into a recording studio in 1969 and producing the charming album Then and Now.
Turn the clock back to 1955 and 1956 and you had a still powerful force and a name still bringing in the crowds at both concerts and on the Las Begas strip. Both albums benefit from the arrangements of musical director Ian Bernard with whom Dick had recently worked in Las Vegas and a trusted friend.
Listen as Dick brings fresh life to some of his former gold discs and gives a fresh treatment to classics of the songbook. My favourite after all these years still is Where or When on which he builds a vocal force second to none. Dick told Alan that his favourite was If I Should Lose You, and it is a definitive version as are so many of these performances. Of the jaunty numbers I Like the like of You, is superb and has Dick handle the medium tempo with ease. I also rate Skylark, very highly and the instrumental solos are just right for him.
Add this now deleted CD to your collection for a piece of history and vocal magic.

5.0 out of 5 stars This budget CD contains the origional LP "Rain Or Shine" 24 Sep 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
One of Haymes best sessions (other then 1957's "Moondreams") he sings ballads in way that will simply knock you out, the best thing about this budget cd is that it contains all 12 songs from the classic capital 1955 LP "Rain Or Shine"(Capital T-713). Buy this one, I'm sure Mel Torme had this one in his music library.

5.0 out of 5 stars A treasure 14 Mar 2008
By gsoj - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
The equal of any of Sinatra's Capitol concept albums, this is a straight reissue of "Rain Or Shine," Capitol T-713, ca. 1955. Together with Dick Haymes' second Capitol album, "Moondreams," this is essential to every collection of Great American Standards. Thanks to Mike Curb for this thoughtful release. Note that both albums are in the current EMI set of complete Capitol recordings.

Dick Haymes had a most pleasing voice and is well worth listening to on cd's and such. The ballads of course of from the 1940's but well arranged and conducted.
