Biography

Far and away the longest lasting and the most successful of the '70s progressive rock groups, Yes proved to be one of the lingering success stories from that musical genre. The band, founded in 1968, overcame a generational shift in its audience and the departure of its most visible members at key points in its history to reach the end of the century as the definitive progressive rock ... 5.0 out of 5 stars If you can afford it, buy it 26 Feb 2008
By Johnny Boy - Published on Amazon.com

This Yes set is expensive. It is a Japanese import, and it is not readily available for the American market. I'm amazed Amazon even sells it.

This set offers 10 fine Yes songs spanning their years on Atlantic. Although their 1969 self-titled debut is skipped over, this starts with the best song from the 1970 'Time And A Word' record ('No Opportunity Necessary, No Experience Needed,' a great cover by the great Richie Havens) and ends with the 1987 single 'Love Will Find A Way' from the 'Big Generator' album.

Is it 'The Best of Yes'? Hardly. If you like Yes' album tracks ('On The Silent Wings Of Freedom,' from 'Tormato,' is a real treat) than you'll like this record a whole lot.

And, for true Yes fans like me, you already have all of these from different sources, whether it be the 2003 Rhino remasters or through the original 1994 Atlantic remasters, there is really no need to shell out $27.00 for this.

Recommended for the serious Yes fan. New fans and casual fans will want to buy something like 'Highlights' or 'The Ultimate Yes.'
4.0 out of 5 stars Affirmatively Speaking 5 Aug 2001

This release was aimed at long-time Yes fans, for the most part. Long-time Yes fans thrive on going deep into the band's repertoire. Which is why most long-time Yes fans are unimpressed with the available compliation releases. This release will satisfy the avant garde needs of most long-time Yes fans up to a point. It's at that point where this release does not measure up to a five star rating. First, the single edit of America is a farce. It would have been preferable to include the full length version and drop Heart of the Sunrise or And You And I. Those two songs show up in quantity on other compliations. Owner of a Lonely Heart and Love Will Find A Way are two major exceptions to the avant garde nature of this release. Hold On or City of Love from 90125 and Shoot High Aim Low or Almost Like Love from Big Generator would have been more appropriate choices from the Eighties Yes for this particular compliation. Overall, Best of Yes earns 4 rocking stars for the long-time Yes fans.

Most long-time Yes fans thrive on going deep into the band's repertoire. Which is why long-time Yes fans are usually unimpressed with the available compliations. The avant garde nature of the tracks on this release should satisfy long-time Yes fans, for the most part. However better choices could have been made in a few instances. For example, the single edit of America is a farce. The full length version would have been preferable over Heart of the Sunrise or And You and I. Those songs appear in quantity on compliations elsewhere. Owner of a Lonely Heart and Love Will Find A Way are significant exceptions to the very progressive nature of the other tracks. Hold On or City of Love from 90125 and Shoot High Aim Low or Almost Like Love from Big Generator from the Eighties Yes would have been more suitable for this cool compliation. This rocking release doesn't measure up to five stars because of that. Overall though, it does earn four stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good selection, better off with Yesstory 12 Oct 2000
By Dan Buchanan - Published on Amazon.com

Yes, they picked mainly songs that were popular and stood out on their respective albums. What they didn't do is pick enough of them. To try and fit the "best of" Yes onto one CD isn't going to happen, and therefore a LOT of classic tracks are left off this one. You're better off with Yesstory, a 2CD set, or the 4CD box set Yesyears. If you like all you hear there, just buy the whole Yes catalogue. You won't be dissappointed.
