Product Description

Album Description

Weather Report, co-founded by keyboard player Joe Zawinul and saxophonist Wayne Shorter, was among the elite of jazz-rock fusion bands. During their 15-year existence (1971-1985) Weather Report continued to advance the fusion idiom, dramatically expanding its harmonic vocabulary, tonal palette, rhythmic dynamism, extra-jazz influences and the relationship between ensemble and soloist in jazz. The Best of Weather Report features 11 brilliantly remixed signature tracks from seven albums recorded between 1973 and 1980. Included are such outstanding compositions as Zawinul's worldwide crossover hit "Birdland" and "A Remark You Made" and Shorter's "Mysterious Traveller" and "Elegant People". As annotator Hal Miller points out, "Each song serves to underscore the fact that what made this band beyond category was the sheer excellence and artistry of its compositions, and its willingness to venture from the safe and predictable to the new and different". The Best Of Weather Report is issued at the same time as 24-bit remastered versions of three complete albums by the group--Mysterious Traveller, Tale Spinnin', and Black Market.

With the possible exception of Freezing Fire, this is a superlative introduction to the music of Weather Report. It's superlative because it encompasses some of the best songs they wrote and recorded, through their ever changing line up. In particular "A Remark You Made" is a magnificently moody piece. If you want to move on from here, then aside from Heavy Weather, you should listen to Night Passage, Black Market and Mysterious Traveller. From their later period I like "This is This" with an excellent contribution from Carlos Santana and my own particular, and peculiar, favourite "Domino Theory". If you want some magnificent Live Versions of Black Market, Badia and others then find an album called "8:30".

If you are new to fusion and you come to it with a rock background, then what you need to know is that Weather Report, along with Return to Forever, were the master exponents of the genre. The band's best were all the albums in the sequence from SWEETNIGHTER to HEAVY WEATHER. (Earlier albums were too jazzy for my taste, and later albums revealed a downward spiral, caused largely by a shortage of the brilliant compositions that sustained the band in the 1970s.)

I loved Weather Report for its rhythm sections, and here you get a wonderful selection of their best bassists -- Pastorius, Al Johnson, Vitous and the much underestimated Andrew White -- and some superb percussionists -- Romao, Acuna, Badrena, Gravatt etc.

HEAVY WEATHER used to be the standard entry point to the band's output for the novice listener. Now this album is the definitive compilation. And the remastered sound is dead good too!

A great introduction 2 April 2007

I am brand new to Weather Report and I am struggling to remember how I was drawn to them but I'm glad I was. Maybe I heard them mentioned in passing reading one of the liner notes to one of the Miles Davis CDs I have or maybe it was a Herbie Hancock CD?? Whatever, it is unimportant because Weather Report aren't really like either Miles or Herbie. They remind me more of Coltrane if Coltrane had done fusion.
How to describe the music on this CD? I have little idea really so please forgive the following attempt...
The music lolls from languid to funk to ethereal to God knows what! I just love it's headiness. The fact that it doesn't seem to make any sense at all. That it is so emotional. That it jarrs and stirs me and I'm constantly caught unawares by it's twists and turns. That it takes influence from all over the shop and makes them all work in one whole.
So, yes, I unequivocally recommend this album to anyone with an interest in musical artistry. It's certainly whetted my appetite and I'm raring to go on with this new adventure (and at £[...] an album on average I think I will pick up quite a few bargains!).
