There are many bands that should have been a lot bigger and Liverpool Express certainly are one of them. Billy Kinsley first tasted fame in the sixties group The Merseybeats and in 1975 formed Liverpool Express with his friend and fellow songwriter Roger Scott Craig. Their biggest hit in the UK was in 1976 with 'You are my love', a hauntingly beautiful track with it's trance like piano that sounded way ahead of it's time.
There is a heavy Beatles influence in their melodies.'Take it easy with my heart' and 'Julian the hooligan' are very reminiscent of John Lennon at his rocking best. They even pay tribute to them on one of the later recorded tracks on this compilation. The song 'It's a beautiful day' from this CD has recently been used in a TV commercial !
If you like 10CC, Pilot, Badfinger and any of the great seventies songwriters you won't be dissapointed with this. A fantastic long overdue CD to say the least. 10/10 +

The only song you may have heard from Liverpool Express is 'You are my love' which opens up this best of compilation with its famous `echoey' piano beginning and atmospheric feel.

If you liked that then I think you'd like the dramatic balladry of 'Every man must have a dream', the cheery pop of 'Smile' and also 'It's a beautiful day' with its simple voice and acoustic guitar arrangement that might just be familiar (It recently featured on TV as a song behind a breakfast cereal ad!). There is also the mini epic 'Julian the Hooligan' with its many interesting twists and turns.

There are two songs here that come from later period Liverpool Express, the 1980s single 'So what' and from the 2003 CD 'Once upon a time', 'John George Ringo & Paul' about you know who!

As a fan I would like to have seen a double CD as the 'Dreamin' and 'LEX' vinyl albums are not on CD but if you like 70s pop music (inspired by the Beatles) this is highly recommended, as the song writing prowess of (mainly) Roger Scott Craig and Billy Kinsley is well in evidence. It is also a very handy collection of the band as well.

I decided to buy this compilation after seeing Liverpool Express on Top Of The Pops '76/'77 of late. The CD is over 50 minutes in duration and contains 16 songs .It will be clear to anyone who is familiar with the music of The Beatles ,Wings/Paul McCartney and John Lennon that Liverpool Express have been massively influenced by these artists. They have made no secret of the influence of The Beatles upon their songs (EG their song 'John,George ,Ringo and Paul') but they are certainly more than a tribute act ! Paul McCartney has stated his personal admiration for 'You Are My Love' and the other songs on this CD are also really likeable .'Julian The Hooligan' is perhaps one of the most modern sounding songs here ;the riff is very akin to one that Blur would be proud of . I found myself grinning broadly as I listened to this CD for the first time because Liverpool Express have managed to use their Beatles influence intelligently and delightfully .'Margie' is a beautiful McCartneyesque piece whilst 'Take it Easy With My Heart' is a superb Lennon inspired song.Mention must be given to Billy Kinsley's convincing vocals that really help to bring the tunes to life .I found the song 'So Here I Go Again' to be very similar to the 1968 Mary Hopkin hit 'Those Were The Days' whilst 'So What?'(1983) would not seem to be out of place on Christopher Cross 's early albums. These are observations rather than criticisms as I enjoy both of these songs. The last third of this compilation has a slight hint of a more transatlantic/ Soul quality to the music at certain times but there is no lessening of the standard set by the earlier work .Let's face it many fine bands including ELO and 10cc have had huge success making use of their Beatles influences in their musical careers so why not Liverpool Express ? I have to say that I really enjoy listening to this CD and I am pleased that I decided to buy it !
