It's a cinematic cliché that when a character faces any kind of loss a yearning female vocal wreathed in sonorous strings singing an Eastern scale will rise from the surround-sound to earnestly tug your heart-strings. The chances are that'll be the voice of Lisa Gerrard. As Dead Can Dance (along with Brendan Perry), she established a gothic chill-out zone of diaphanous beauty and implicit spirituality that offered a dreamy haven from the materialistic 80s. Now a noted film composer, this release is an introductory showreel for those left wanting more of the same at the end of Ridley Scott's Gladiator.
Her wordless invocations, borrowed folk melodies and psuedo-ethnic instrumental settings are woven into an undeniably attractive soft-focus mix that's nevertheless curiously hollow on close inspection. Fans regard her music as a place of refuge though they should get out more often if they're looking for something of real substance. --Sid Smith

Lisa Gerrard's work is becoming ever more popular in film, notably the incredible themes as used over the past decade in The Insider, Gladiator, Tears of the Sun, Layer Cake, Man on Fire, The Mist, and many more. This 'best of' album gives the listener just a taste of her work. Although it is an amazing collection as is, it is a big shame that many of the most popular and familiar tracks mentioned above are not included - this could have been without doubt the ultimate Lisa Gerrard collection.
However, this turns out to be just a minor disappointment. The more you listen to this album, the more you find yourself becoming astounded and stunned by the different sounds that she can produce with that unbelieveable voice. Even tracks that at first do not necessarily stick in your mind begin to grow on you. Clever and intelligent music, it is not to everyone's taste. As one reviewer has said before, her music is like Marmite - you either love it or hate it. I couldn't agree more.
Favourite tracks: The Host of Seraphim, Sanvean.

A fantastic album but maybe not to everyones taste. If you enjoyed the

I would of gave this five stars but there were a couple of weak tracks I.E. Cantara, Swans and also had my favorite dead can dance track is missing. Summoning of the muse. which in my view blows everything on this album away. If you have never heard this track take look and listen on you tube you will be blown away trust me. After you been blown away you might, sorry will want to buy the album Wake which is a best of The Dead Can Dance.

Great Music
Got this album because of a song used in an episode of the west wing called Sanvean. Really glad I brought it as there is some great music on here.
