Born Angus McKenzie in Glasgow, he was raised in Glasgow but then spent a few years in the Norwegian merchant navy. He then joined a Scottish regiment and fought in the Korean War before returning to the navy. He eventually jumped ship in America, eventually ending up in Nashville, where he acquired his stage name.
Karl's music embraced folk music from around the world and he carved his own niche in the UK record market. Beginning in the summer of 1961, Karl reeled off four UK top ten hits with Marcheta, Mexicali rose, Wimoweh and Never goodbye. Wimoweh (also known as The lion sleeps tonight) was the biggest of these, peaking at number four, and remains the song that Karl is best remembered for.
Karl had seven further hits in the sixties. The biggest hit among them, Still (a cover of a country song by Bill Anderson), was a top twenty hit that might have made the top ten if it hadn't faced competition from a version by Ken Dodd, although Karl's version was a much bigger hit than Ken's.
Karl disappeared from the charts after 1964 but made a one-off comeback with a minor hit in 1990 in which he supported the Happy Mondays. That hit is not included here but all of Karl's sixties hits, however minor, are here. This is a fine collection of music that may have introduced some people to new and different sounds.

Compiling a "Best Of..." album is always a risky business, as you always end up asking why this or that track was excluded. All in all the contents just about fit the CD's title, as all of his most popular hits from 1961 to 1963 are here - Wimoweh, Mexicali Rose, Marchita, Never Goodbye and My World of Blue, amongst others. Also, A Little Love a Little Kiss, which I rank amongst his very best. And if you are still unconvinced by the range of Karl Denver's voice, and think he's all powerful shouting and falsetto, then try out the bravura performances of "My Mother's Eyes" and "If I Had My Way". They are really something very special. For me, an outstanding feature of a lot of Karl Denver's music was the tasteful guitar playing of Kevin Neill - sadly the last surviving member of the Karl Denver Trio who passed away fairly recently. In the less orchestrated numbers his clear and precise playing can be enjoyed as an additional value-added. Very reasonably priced, this album is the perfect way to remind yourself of a unique singer, or maybe catch up for the first time on what you have missed over all these years.

Bought this CD for my husband for a little trip down memory lane and almost wish I hadn't now as he hasn't stopped playing it - virtually every day! I've got to admit it really is a brilliant record, if, like us you remember the Karl Denver of old, in the 50/60's. We weren't huge fans of his then but I defy anybody who remembers Karl to play this record and not love it. He really does perform far better than ever I remember him, every song is a toe-tapper, especially our favourite - Way down upon the Swanee River ! Play it and see if you can fail to dance around the room (or at least jiggle your legs you oldies)
Absolutely brilliant, and such a bargain, worth every penny and more. They certainly don't make em like this anymore !

This guy had the most unusual voice, a talent that you dont see/hear anymore, I remember him from my younger days, so this album brings back all the times when music was really music,I strongly recommend this album to any prospective buyers, even if you never heard of the guy, give it some space and Im sure you will enjoy as much as I am,,,, Alex B,

We all have them dont we? An album you really rate but never hear others talk about. This is one of mine. Bought about 10 years or more ago. I played it in the house, in the car, in the bath even. Then it goes away for a while until you re-arrange your collection & out it comes again for another 100 spins or so. My favourite on there is the Old John Williams (Ithink) classic. Just a Little Love a Little Kiss. Want to just lay back & listen or grab your partner & sing along in her ear, it dont matter this song is for you. Wimoweh, Old man river, the old Slim songs tweaked abit. They are all worth playing a hundred times or more. Like music? then there IS something on here for you.
Oh I met the man back a ways, he was as polite as could be & answered every question my young son (& I) could ask.
A great vocalist.
RIP Karl.

As a fan of Karl Denver back in the 60's , I was delighted to lay my hands on this album. What happy memories of a time when a guy like Karl [no teenager ,not good looking , unusual voice , even stranger choice of material] could make a huge impact on the charts.
This album showcases all his hits from back then illustrating the versatility of his voice from the wild Wmoweh through the soft romantic If I Had My Way to the straight "standard" A Little Love A Little Kiss. A much underrated and sadly a much forgotten sound of the 60's.
I head this "Almost The Best Of" as given the space on CDs it omits some of his later beautiful love songs like the haunting My Lovely World And You and the traditional She Moved
Thro The Fair. A small criticism as what it does include is excellent and well worth the modest price.
