These compilations can be very confusing. There is also one called ‘Best of Jose Carreras’, ‘The Very Best of Jose Carreras’ and even one called simply ‘Jose Carreras’. They do all have different tracks and although there is a great variety of songs here including opera they are not in my opinion ‘The Best of Jose Carreras’, for that you need the double CD called “The Golden Years” or another double CD mentioned above ‘The Very Best of Jose Carreras’. Quite a few songs are in English but in several of them he forces and strains. That’s hard for me to say because he is my favourite tenor but this is just not his best. His singing many times has sent shivers up my spine but many times on this recording my teeth have been set on edge. He can sing ‘Panis Angelicus’ very beautifully but not on this CD. It’s acceptable but not his best.

I wouldn’t say it is so bad you shouldn’t buy it but he can sing better than many of the tracks on here. I like his singing of ‘Amore Perduto’, it is very heart rendering because he sings passion and melancholy very well.

I’ve been listening to this CD while writing this and I would have to say I am glad that I bought it but mostly for the variety of songs that are on it. I find I can only give it three stars but I don’t think any Jose Carreras fan would want to be without it.

Not All of "The Best" 14 Jan 2000
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
It would be impossible to put all of Carrera's "BEST" on one CD, however, this was the one that convinced to buy many more of this great tenor's works. The Best of Carreras is the one I go back to most often for the simple pleasure of listening to this wonderful voice.
