The years of 1956 and 1957 brought the 'Calypso Boom', and no-one was more responsible for this Caribbean craze than Harry Belafonte. We offer here 'Calypso', the first LP ever to be certified a million-seller, and its studio follow-up 'Belafonte Sings Of The Caribbean', released a year later in the summer of 1957, digitally remastered with bonus tracks.

Format:Audio CD
This set comprises 2 original albums "Calypso" plus "Sings Of The Caribbean" and bonus tracks too. The sound is good and these are transfers from record to CD and are clear throughout. The running times are 44 and 50 minutes.
The albums date from 1956 and 57 with the earliest bonus recordings from 1953. The CDs are nicely packaged and with liner notes by Michael Heatley and the compilation put together by Glenn Gretlund and Tony Watts.
This is a good chance to hear the early and developing sound of one of the most popular of American performers of the 20th century.

These two cds are wonderful to have, especially if you are passionate about Harry Belafonte and his early songs.
The iconic Banana Boat song is the first on the list and many other wonderful songs of his feature next to it. However, the title of the compilation is misleading.
I would have liked to see Matilda on the list, or Shake Senora there as well.
But for the price, what you get is more than enough.
All in all a good purchase I do not regret!

I bought this CD set for some of the clasic Belafonte songs,which were as expected.The trouble is that there were not enough of them. The rest were rather poor & unispiring.

Double CD with many unknown songs

budget recording
Great singer, but not done any favours by the quality of the recording. Perhaps to many of the more obscure songs by a great performer.

Took a trip down memory lane listening to this. Great cd with most of his best known hits. A real pick me up fun cd. great value for money especially as its a double cd. Read more
