By Peter Durward Harris #1 HALL OF FAME TOP 10 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
Benny Gallagher and Graham Lyle were more interested in songwriting than performing and it was as songwriters that they first made an impact. The first song of theirs that anybody recorded was Mr Heartbreak's here again. Dean Ford and the Gaylords (later to become the Marmalade) released it as a single but it flopped. Gallagher and Lyle continued to develop and Mary Hopkin recorded Sparrow

At about that time, Manfred Mann disbanded (later to re-emerge with a different line-up as Manfred Mann's Earth Band) and two of its members, Tom Mc Guinness and Hughie Flint, formed their own group, Mc Guinness Flint. Gallagher and Lyle were offered places in this new group, which they accept. They wrote and performed on two UK top five hits for the group (When I'm dead and gone, Malt and barley blues) but the pressures generated by the success became too great so the group disbanded.

Gallagher and Lyle decided to continue as a duo, working at their own pace. They recorded some fine albums before, in 1976, they released their strongest album, Breakaway. Two UK hits (I wanna stay with you, Heart on my sleeve) both peaked at number six, while the title track was a minor UK hit. Art Garfunkel covered Breakaway and had an American top forty hit with it.

Again, Gallagher and Lyle resisted the commercial pressure to exploit their success although they recorded further albums and had another minor UK hit, Every little teardrop. They continued as songwriters, not always together. Graham Lyle had a huge international hit when he co-wrote What's love got to do with it for Tina Turner.

This compilation contains the best of their music after Mc Guinness Flint disbanded. An earlier (out of print) compilation includes the two Mc Guinness Flint hits, which are omitted from this set. If you enjoy simple melodic pop music, give Gallagher and Lyle a listen.

I love listening to these songs by two under-rated songwriters, although with the royalties they've gathered from the many cover versions of their songs I'm sure they're not too bothered. Although some tracks sound slightly dated this is music from the days when music meant guitar-led melody and meaningfull lyrics. Apart from the well known songs such as 'Heart on my sleeve' and 'Breakaway' listen to the little gem that is 'Runaway' to see what I mean; it's just lovely. Despite the occasional 'click' and 'pop' the sound quality is ok but they really deserve a remastered compilation. Highly recommended to those who like the Eagles, Andrew Gold, Bread, and quality singer- songwriters.

A Real Gem 5 Jan 2004
Format:Audio CD
In 1976 the album 'Breakaway' reached number 6 in the album charts. This compilation contains only a few tracks from that magnificent album. Here you are gifted 21 great songs for so cheap. That is value for money in anyones language. Heart On my Sleeve sets the scene for two of the best songwriters of the time to sing as if they are enjoying every minute. Two guitars, two disctintive voices, simple harmonies and not a drum machine in site, heaven. Never complain about the cost of music again and simply click the buy button to add this album to you collection.

From a different era of music
Nothing wrong with the product. I must have let nostalgia take over though as this music no longer has a niche.

Glad I bought it
Had given away my vinyl record collection and found I missed a lot of it. This replaces most of the Gallagher and Lyle LPs.

good
You either have to be into G&L or the 70's soft rock ballad I suppose. Either way it is a good buy and is easy listening while driving, though a lot of the tracks can be found on... Read more
