Product Description

This rare 1969 psych classic was released by International Artists Records, the 1960s Texas label which has gained cult status over the years amongst fans of prime American psychedelic and garage rock. The Bubble Puppy were IA's second biggest act in terms of chart action after The 13th Floor Elevators and enjoyed a degree of commercial success with their distinct high-energy, hippy rock-pop sound and look. Formed in San Antonio in 1967, their first 45 waxing, the brilliant Hendrix-inspired 'Hot Smoke & Sassafras', combined hard rock with fresh vocal harmonies and reached #14 in the U.S. charts in March 1969. The resultant album from that year, 'A Gathering Of Promises', featured more of the same raw, garage-psych sound and was equally strong. This edition of the album in a rigid digibook package also includes both sides of the group's four singles as bonus tracks, four of which were not on the original album, whilst two of the other sides were different mixes to the album versions. The accompanying 16-page illustrated booklet features unique quotes about the band, the music and the times from original band member David Fore, who was specially interviewed for this release.

A solid overview 2 Nov. 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
2 caveats must be kept in mind with this record:
1) Like all compilations, it's inevitable to bemoan a certain missing track or 2. (I would have liked to see "Adolescent Funk" and the title track from the "Hardcore Jollies" album.) An unreleased track or 2 would have been nice as well.
2) Hardcore P-Funk fans have long debated the merits of the post-Westbound era Funkadelic-less guitar-oriented, closer to mainstream '70's R&B and dance music, and less gritty, dark lyrics. Your affection for this record will depend on whether you view the WB-era Funkadelic as a great funk-dance band, or a sellout and betrayal of the earlier, rawer Funkadelic.
That said, this is a great compilation, weeding out the best (and, not coincidentally, most popular) music from this classic band's later period. I personally prefer the early Funkadelic, but still enjoy the hits for what they are. It's not the best P-Funk (Standing on the Verge still has my vote) but for a primer to the later years, this will do nicely.

Excellent compilation!!! 16 Dec. 2000
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
If you are looking for a compilation of Funkadelic's music, the two CD's to get are Finest from Westbound Records and The Very Best Of Funkadelic (1976-1981) from Charly. Finest is the best compilation of Funkadelic songs from their Westbound era and The Very Best of Funkadelic is the best compilation of songs from the Warner Brothers era. The Very Best of Funkadelic also has two live versions of songs from Funkadelic's Westbound era (Cosmic Slop and Maggot Brain). Of course, this exposure to Funkadelic's music will only leave you craving more.

(4 stars, no matter what the rating implies) Good, not perfect but P-Funk fans need it 1 Sept. 2005
By finulanu - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This compilation has been released and rereleased shamelessly over the years. The same music, but with different packaging. Ironically, a shameless ripoff such as this one is a must for Funkadelic fans. No, it's not at all the ideal overview, but I can't complain about much here. Still, I can complain about some things: Icka Prick and the Sly Stone collaboration Funks Gets Stronger are both far from the group's best songs: I would've rather heard either the title song to Hardcore Jollies (its inclusion would've rended that album inessential) or a full verison of (Not Just) Knee Deep. One Nation Under a Groove is an essential album, but they rounded up the three best tracks (title song; Cholly; Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock?!), but this is the only album perfectly represented. The liner notes are a minus: besides being skimpy, they also misspell the "Motown" label "Mowtown", and refer to Parliament as the Parliaments.
Nice introduction to Funkadelic 21 Dec. 2010
By Scott B. Saul - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This is a brief yet satisfying compilation of essential Funkadelic songs. This is a hard group to narrow down to a greatest hits compilation since there are the considerations of
catchy songs, deep grooves, musical virtuosity and wild psychodelia.

Sometimes you listen to the music because it's a great song ("one nation under a groove"), the grooves are so deep and funky (cosmic slop...what an amazing version), the chops are there ("who says a a funk band can't play rock music", "maggot brain") or just plain weirdness ("Uncle Jam"). The band is so much more than just the few tunes on this cd.

The best song on here is the live version of "Cosmic Slop". Nowhere, I MEAN NOWHERE, will you find a deeper groove than on that killer tune.

Without taking away from this, a compilation of the P Funk world should have Parliament, George Clinton, Bootsy and all the other related artists
