Most Helpful Customer Reviews

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful By Joe Moer on 25 April 2008
Format: Audio CD
The other reviews focus on marketing, not music. This release is valid because it is cheaper than the previous compilation!

This is an very good selection showing genre-spanning material rooted in techno and DJ culture, but with indie/rock influences, which occasionally dominate. Its drawn from the three Concrete (Sony) albums by Richard Fearless and Tim Holmes, the duo who make up Death In Vegas. In those days they frequently used guest vocalists, for example:

Paul Weller on a version of ex-Byrd Gene Clark's 'So You Say You Lost Your Baby'

Liam Gallagher on 'Scorpio Rising'

Iggy Pop on 'Aisha'

All are compelling as is a cover of the Beat's 'Twist and Crawl'. There's also Nicola Kuperus of Detroit techno/electro duo Adult on 'Hands Around My Throat' and Dot Allison on 'Dirge'.

And I haven't yet mentioned the genuinely exciting 'Dirt'.

At this price, this 'Best of' is virtually a public service.

Death in Vegas is enjoyable but I usually have it on in the background rather than listen to it. I like rock and songs with performers who have virtuosic moments. It does come close to incidental music for movies where mood is more important than message. Me and my brothers do have a soft spot for Iggy Pop and 'Aisha' ..and they made me like Liam Gallagher for just one song ('Scorpio Rising').

The first reviewer hit the nail on the head. There's no need for another 'best of' album.
