Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

The thirteen songs on this early Best Of collection take us from Rea's 1978 debut to the Dancing With Strangers album. New Light has since been superceded by The Best Of Chris Rea, which also includes material from Auberge and The Road To Hell. This selection, however, is in some ways preferable, since the songs all exhibit the looser performing style of his earlier years and their mix of soul, classic rock and MOR schmaltz sit together more naturally. Like his fellow Northeastener Robert Palmer, Chris Rea is hard to pigeonhole: if not a great guitarist he is at least very gifted, with a warm style that borrows from Keith Richards and Eric Clapton. Apart from the timeless "Fool (If You Think It's Over)", his songs tend towards the derivative, but his voice is rich and charming enough for this not to matter. Lyrically, he is always honest and unpretentious, and his evocations of his Middlesborough childhood, in "Windy Town" and "Steel River", are genuine urban romance. Rea has few real competitors in the art of the corny love song, and "Josephine" still runs away with the prizes. New Light is best heard by candlelight with a glass of red wine-throughout, it is beautifully produced, intelligent and exceedingly mellow. --James Swift

The history to this album is interesting: All the tracks on this albums are available on other previous albums, but every one is a re-recording, starting from scratch, not some disco dub/remix of the original - hence the New Light Through Old Windows Titles.

Rea and his band reportedly recorded these tracks during sessions for other albums, and kept it from the record company until Rea was happy with the recordings and production/mixing. The record company snapped it up immediately and released it as an album, much to Rea's surprise who thought of it as more of a private pet project.

So here we get Chris' own favourite tracks re-recorded, perhaps the way he would have preffered to do them (or perhaps the way he heard them in his head) all those years ago: Ace of Hearts, Josephine, Candles, they're all here - and all sounding refreshed and new! Of course, this album is nearly twenty years old now (I can remember buying it on vinyl!) but still the tracks are great.

Reccomended.

An old favourite 29 Sep 2006

This album has a lot of personal significance for me, my Father got me into Chris Rea with this album and whenever I hear a song from New Light... I always think about him. I love Rea's style, the laid back approach and his husky voice make for very pleasant listening and showed me during a time when I was steeped in heavy metal music that there were other forms of enjoyable music out there.

This album is classic Chris Rea: a real mixture of songs, some festive Like Driving Home For Christmas and others very romantic and though-provoking such as I Can Hear Your Heart Beat and On The Beach. The voice of Chris Rea has an earthy quality to it which can be quite depressing to listen to but I think is really mellow and relaxing.
