Biography

Radiohead created a rock grunge sound influenced by Nirvana and the Pixies in the nineties, with albums like Pablo Honey and The Bends. In the 2000s, they Merged electronica with abrasive guitar with Kid A and Amnesiac. They inspire the listener to be uplifted and reflective in equal measure. Their most critically acclaimed album, 1997's OK Computer, has been nominated as one of the ... Read more in Amazon's Radiohead Store

Enough has been said about this compilation not being representative of what the band are about, but for an objective test I compared the track listing with what they performed live when I saw them at Victoria Park earlier this week. They played just five songs from the first disc and another four from the second out of a total of twenty five performed. Were it not for the second disc that would be a terrible hit rate for a supposed "Best Of" album; even with it that's barely over a third of their live set covered. There are no two ways about it; this is a fundamentally backward-looking compilation.

That said, the songs are still great and stand on their own merits even outside their original album contexts. If you want a Radiohead sampler, this is about as good as it gets at the moment, despite the flaws.

Personally I don't do compilations and I agree that they are not suited to most of Radiohead's music anyway, since every album after 'The Bends' has had its own concept. You could ask 10,000 different people what should go on a compilation album and you would probably get 10,000 different opinions. Lets be quite clear here, all these tracks are great and anyone checking out Radiohead for the first time will hopefully enjoy it. No one needs to feel guilty about buying this album. I find it quite hypocritical when anyone living comfortably in the western world talks about exploitation. We've all been reaping the benefits of exploitation for years, unless you live with the fairies at the bottom of the garden and make a living from selling daisy chains to squirrels, so I think it's unfair to single out the men in grey suits at EMI. Anyway I've given this review 5 stars in support of the music and I'll leave the politics to the hypocrites and the Guardian editorial. Enjoy the music.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Blast 7 Nov 2012

I love this double compilation album. I think the negative reviews miss the point. These are highlights from Radiohead's albums blended together and specially sequenced in a thought-out fashion that offer an alternative approach to their vast library of music compared to a rigid album per album listening, which I agree is also beneficial.

In addition, you will not find "Talk Show Host", an amazing song featured in the film Romeo + Juliet, on any of their albums so that is a worthwhile inclusion. Granted this album is not for purists, but for more flexible people who do not have fixed ideas about what Radiohead is about and how their music "should" be listened to, I think this is a darn fine double compilation album. I also agree with the choices made and I think they are representative of that special Radiohead energy that took me years to fully grasp.

The Bends and OK Computer are the most featured albums with a total of seven tracks each (on the double album version), then comes Kid A with four, Hail to the Thief with three, Amnesiac with three and Pablo Honey with three.

Of course, Radiohead have produced great works since those days, most notably In Rainbows but also King of Limbs (which I'm very fond of) and, at the very least, this compilation album shows the extent of their genius as an alternative Rock/Electro band.

4.0 out of 5 stars Goog compilation, some strange exclusions
The compilatation is good, though there are no never released before songs. Also, some of the most famous tracks are missing (for instance, All I Need). Anyway, I recommend it.
