Product Description

Second volume of the best bits from the influential BBC alternative comedy show that ran from 1979 to 1982, mixing news clippings and archive material with monologues and music to satirise media, society and current affairs. The show was a launchpad for the careers of Rowan Atkinson, Mel Smith, Griff Rhys Jones and Pamela Stephenson. Sketches included are: 'Nobble Button', 'Not the Parrot Sketch', 'Jenkins' Pee', 'Nine to Five Wildebeest', 'Schmidt's Old Shag', 'National Health Beds', 'University Challenge', 'Cappucino', 'I Like Trucking', 'Join the Russian Army', 'Campari and Soda', 'Non-Diet Pepsi' and 'Nice Video Shame About the Song'.

Synopsis

More memorable sketch-show comedy from the 1980s Not The Nine O'clock News team of Mel Smith, Griff Rhys-Jones, Pamela Stephenson and Rowan Atkinson. Full of spoofs and topical satire this second volume includes the classic scene where Rowan Atkinson is casually walking down the street only to be distracted by the camera crew, which causes him to walk straight into that lamp-post. Also includes the songs I Like Trucking and Nice Video - Shame About The Song.

Other sketches include: Nobble Button, Not the Parrot Sketch, Jenkins' Pee, Nine-to-Five Wildebeest, Schmidt's Old Shag, National Health Beds, University Challenge, Cappucino, Join the Russian Army, Campari and Soda and Non-Diet Pepsi.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice DVD, shame about the extras 6 Sep 2005
Another lazy release by the Beeb - this is simply the VHS release titled "Nice Video Shame About The Hedgehog" transferred onto DVD with the pathetic DVD extras being listed as "subtitles and scene selection"

Not the Nine O'Clock news deserves a better tribute than this - why didn't the BBC put a bit of effort in and reunite the cast and producers for a special feature on the show?

The feature making it worthy of purchase is the sheer quality of the comedy which remains fresh even today in a TV world where comedy standards have dropped as low as Little Britain.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dear BBC, I wish to make a complaint... 24 Mar 2011
By A. Chell VINE™ VOICE
...that only two NOTN DVDs are available.

This stuff is comedy gold, whether the sketches are absurdist (Gerald the Gorilla) or have a satirical aspect (Constable Savage).

A look at the writing team behind the series reads like a who's who of British comedy talent and it shows on the screen. I'm too young for Monty Python, so this is my formative comedy experience, and what an experience it is.

My only criticism is that there are too few episodes available on DVD - which makes me "absolutely livid".

4.0 out of 5 stars Great! Now where's the rest? 7 July 2012
By Unsmart
Today it seems like every comedy show ever made has gotten its own complete box dvd release. Except for this one.

The fact that Rowan Atkinson - one of the truly greatest comedians of all time - has a major role in it, should be reason alone for such a release. Then we have the fact that "Not the nine o'clock news" is one of the best comedy shows from the entire 1980's.

According to IMDb there are 27 episodes. On dvd we have 2 dvd's with 3 or 4 half hour episodes each. It makes no sense.

As a mere protest, I'm giving this dvd a mere 4 stars instead of 5.
