5.0 out of 5 stars Thinking about meditating used to stress me out 28 April 2011
By jaelyndsey - Published on
Meditation is one of those things I've always known I should be doing - if only I could just sit still and focus. Sound familiar? Thankfully, we meditation-challenged can finally relax. The Best Meditations on the Planet offers an easy to grasp, no-stress guide to making meditation a vital part of your life.

I always thought that before I could meditate I had to prepare myself somehow and I never quite felt like I was "in the right space," so consequently, never did. After reading this book I realized that meditation can happen anywhere at anytime - and the more often I put myself in this frame of mind, the calmer, saner, and happier I am. What do you know?

It shows you how to seize moments and turn them into meditation opportunities - it doesn't have to be a long, drawn-out endeavor - but rather minutes of focused thought. And even better, the book is broken down into categories of human condition. Feeling fearful or anxious? There's a meditation for that. Want to be a better athlete? There's a meditation for that too.

Like yoga, which was once considered a "fringe" exercise, people are beginning to understand that meditation is also a natural component of a balanced, healthy lifestyle. If you've been skeptical or unsure of how to get started, give this book a read. It will forever change the way you think of meditation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring Book! 26 April 2011
By Kerr County People Magazine - Published on
Just finished reading "Best Meditations on the Planet" -- written by Skye Alexander. Not only is this book very well written, but visually exciting for those of us who are drawn to, and inspired by photograhs. A must-read for anyone looking for inspiration.

5.0 out of 5 stars Getting the most out of meditation 6 May 2011
By MMR - Published on
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book captures what I miss most about my current practice of meditation: simplicity. The authors remind the readers that meditation does not need to be complicated. They accomplish this with humor in the introduction. "Don't just do something...sit there." Next, the authors list chapter headings in the Table of Contents with enough details to entice you to read more. Finally,
there is a calming visual quality to the 40 plus photographs chosen for this book. Each stunning photo reinforces the essence of the words. Additionally, the Cross-Reference Chart at the end of the book is invaluable. It offers a short-cut for the reader to focus on a specific condition or objective. I look forward to exploring many of the techniques suggested in this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars As Good as It Seems! 14 Jan 2013
By A. E. Handley - Published on
Actual Rating: 4.5 Stars, but worth giving it a 5.
Usually, I find that if a book has only 5 star reviews, someone is missing a giant flaw. This book, however, is truly wonderful. This is a simple look at the benefits of meditation, but most importantly gives a practical way to put these practices into place.
There are many, many books that will teach about how to meditate, but you have to read pages of information to glean the exercise itself. While meditation is definitely an important and worthwhile subject to study, not everyone has time or will make time to do so. This book offers basic information followed by exercises without excessive information.
My favorite line from the introduction: "If you're too busy to meditate, you're too busy." (Seriously, you don't even need to read the intro, just flip open to a page.)
What I liked:
The layout of the book is simple and does not take a lot of time to digest. You can flip to a page with an issue you want to address and read just that.
The exercises are helpful. I have difficulty with insomnia and was hoping this would maybe offer some relief without medication. There is one exercise designed to help relax the mind and prepare the body for rest. I did this and fell asleep within minutes. It doesn't always happen that way, but I am able to shut down properly more often now.
What You May Not Like (not enough for me to detract even a full star):
This is not a book for those already deeply involved in meditation. There is not a lot of new information presented and it is very likely you could find a lot of this on the internet. The presentation and ease of use is what makes this worthwhile to me.
There are also a few exercises that I don't think I'd consider meditation. They are interesting ideas (creating a mandala to find balance), but they also feel like fillers. There were also a few really specific meditations that I wasn't expecting and wouldn't necessarily be helpful to everyone, but they were interesting. (There were several on aging and memory loss, which does not seem as applicable to someone in their 20's, but may be helpful for preventing memory issues later.)

It is rare for me to spend more than a few dollars on a book, but this is one I want to keep to have on hand when issues arise, and I would recommend it for anyone with an open mind wishing to find natural methods to deal with whatever life throws their way.

5.0 out of 5 stars It IS the greatest meditation book on the planet! 26 April 2011
By Anne - Published on
I really appreciate this book's holistic approach, with meditations to support body, mind, and spirit. And these suggested exercises don't require previous meditation experience to be successful...they're suitable for everyone. The book's format makes it easy to use, as well. Can't go wrong with this one!
