Australia's Little River Band, a Melbourne outfit formed in 1975, seem to be a name that few know about. First things first - I'm no expert on them, nor their discography - their name was mentioned a few years ago when I first got into U.S band Styx. This Best Of, cheap secondhand as a CD is my first dip into their musical waters.

As an intro to the band, this collection seems fine. Musically, they are a little too 'Radio Playlist US Rock' for my ears, with often impressive and very pleasant sounding close harmony vocals. Styx they are not, though I can see the similarities (such as they are) with Styx, so don't feel cheated by the recommendation.

Song-wise and instrumentally, they are competent and a bit safe, to be honest. I can hear many of those power ballads of American soft-rock in many, but as I don't own any of those artist's albums, I can't say whom exactly. Lead singer (& bassist) Wayne Nelson has a fine Glen Frey sort of voice and is probably the driving force throughout.

This release is part of EMI's 'Ten Best' series, which means you only get 10 songs, which might seem a bit mean, especially of you're a fan. This also means that you do get a concise, consistent quality without fillers or covers. Little River Band (apparently) remain one of Australia's biggest bands and exports and it's not hard to see why. Whether softish harmony rock is your cup of tea or not is more of an issue but I'd say that if it is, then this is a very listenable inclusion - and alternative - to the genre.

You'll have to be quite forgiving to the cheap packaging though - the cover insert is just a single slip of printed paper (blank on the inside!) and without any band info whatsoever...

I recently saw the lead singer Glenn Shorrock here in Adelaide. He must be sixty but is still great on stage. Buy this one. Great success in the US particularly in the seventies.

better than the other more expensive greatest hits 6 Nov. 1999
By robert kilbride - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
I was skeptical buying this cd because I hate getting edited down single versions of songs. I bought it anyway because it was much cheaper than the other greatest hits package. I did make note of the song lengths printed on the other hits package. As it turns out these versions are the full length versions and the full price greatest hits has edited versions. This contains 2 fewer songs than the other one but this one includes all of their American Top 20 hits.

Memories Galore 10 Dec. 2001
By Mark Bryant - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
The Little River Band has to be one of the most underrated groups of all time. From the nostalgic "Reminiscing", to
the funky "Happy Anniversary", all the way to the uplifting
anthem "Cool Change", LRB crossed all musical genres with
ease; making them appealing to a broad audience. The first
night I received this CD, I played it five times in a row.
Glen Shorrock and Graham Goble should have never stopped writing!
A definite must for any contemporary music fan of the late 70's
and early 80's.

A great album! 9 Jun. 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com

A solid album that doesn't have a bad song on it! All the tunes are original full length studio versions. I was a little skeptical before I purchased the CD, but now that I have listened to the whole thing, I am not disappointed. You won't be either.

Every song on here is a winner 4 Sept. 2001
By Joe Owen - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
I enjoyed listening to the Little River Band on the Radio in the late 1970's and early 1980's. This CD has all their hits and the songs are the ones I know every word of. From "Cool Change", "Take It Easy On Me", "Man On Your Mind" and my favorite "Reminiscing" these are songs you can hear over and over again.
It's ashame that there are not bands like this today, with all the heavy metal and grunge left over wannabe's to those who want to sound like Mariah Carey or Boyz II Men, I miss the sound of the 70's suburbs. The Little River Band reminds me of when we didn't take ourselves too seriously and had to have some sort of attitude and message with a song. These are just nice to listen to "light" hits. This is a CD that I enjoy listening to and I recommend it to those who like to listen to great vocals and good songs where they don't scream at you.

The only LRB CD you need! 8 Aug. 2000
By Debbie Z. - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
If there was ever a CD that truly lived up to its name of "Greatest Hits" THIS IS IT!!!!! How many times have you bought a CD where EVERY SONG was good? This is one of them! You can listen to it over and over and not get sick of these classic 70s & 80s tunes. VERY highly recommended, and how can you beat it at this price????
