Product Description

CD Description

For almost five decades Kiki Dee has proved herself to be one of the finest British female singers of her generation; her rich legacy of recordings underline her vocal versatility and remain timeless in their appeal. The recordings featured in this new Best Of collection are testimony to Kiki’s status as one of Britain’s top female performers.

In 1970 Kiki became the first British signing to Tamla Motown, and flew to Detroit to make her debut album, Great Expectations, for the company. At first, chart success eluded her, although the album received positive reviews from the media, and after her recording deal with Motown finished it was another three years before Kiki returned to recording. Fate finally dealt a positive hand in 1972 when she was signed to Elton John‘s fledgling Rocket Records.

Kiki Dee's songs have survived almost five decades of changing musical trends. This new collection is evidence of her considerable contribution to popular music, both at home and abroad.

While most people will agree that Kiki Dee has been vastly under-appreciated throughout her long career (who can understand the fickle finger of fate in the music business), what most are unaware of is that not only is she an incredibly fine singer, but also a brilliant song writer. A cursory glance over the cover notes of her albums shows that there are an amazing number of excellent self-penned songs.

To me, this only makes it harder to understand. Great voice - tick. Great song writer - tick. Excellent production values on all her recordings - tick. Doesn't make much sense, does it ?

To this day it makes me angry that this legendary artist is known predominantly for two songs - Amoureuse and Don't go breaking my heart.

Buy this CD because it contains a great cross section of her recorded output for Elton John's Rocket Records, but then buy all the newly remastered albums that these tracks have been taken from, and discover what neglected gems they are.

Kiki Dee 1 Nov 2009
Format:Audio CD
Kiki Dee was very good, but not really appreciated; she seemed like an appendage to Elton John, because of their joint no.1 hit. But her version of Nancy Wilson's "How Glad I Am", with its hook in the bass line, is a star track, and many others are good; including "First Thing In The Morning". And unlike most "Best of" collections, nothing obvious has been missed out.
