Product Description

CD Description

The distinctive instrumental sound of Johnny & The Hurricanes, featuring Hammond organ and rasping R&B sax, helped the band to achieve nine chart hits between 1959-1961. This compilation features some of their greatest recordings, including their debut single 'Crossfire', and their top 5 hit 'Red River Rock'.

A Honkin' Winner 23 May 2009

An excellent, great value-for-money compilation. The tracks featured all appear to be the original versions and, whilst not being of superb sonic quality, do reflect the authentic grungey rawness of the band's sound. It's missing 'Sand Storm', the superb B-side of 'Beatnik Fly' but you can't have everything. I bought this mainly as a way of 'topping up' my Shopping Basket but it turned out to be the cream of the crop. Dancing party guaranteed!

Just to make you aware..

As you can see from the artwork this CD's actual title is "The Best of Johnny and the Hurricanes". The artwork and track list shown are correct, but Amazon has transposed the CD title of this and another J&TH CD. I've got both CDs. This CD is okay, the other is awful. I'm not going to bother reporting this problem since Amazon won't action it - they almost never do. Neither CD contains anything much more than composer credits for the songs, no liner notes worth speaking of. But this is the 21st Century right? So, as you might expect there is an excellent Wikipedia page on the group.

Er, cheap 18 Nov 2008

Well, you couldn't pay much less, could you? The presentation of this CD reflects this too. The insert contains only songwriting credits for information, revealing that the band wrote most of their own stuff, though often by plundering a traditional tune. The sound quality isn't too clever either. I have a copy of the 'Rocking Goose' single and it doesn't sound as muddy as the recording on this disc. As far as the music is concerned, the band enjoyed several hits, led by distinctive organ melodies and funked up by sax, guitar and jumping drums. Their most exciting track is probably 'Crossfire', which sounds like a precursor to fast surf numbers like 'Misirlou', but as ever the sound quality blunts it. As for their cover of 'The Sheik Of Araby', it comes complete with vinyl-style crackles which leads you to wonder what method was used to transfer these recordings to CD. Perhaps an example of getting what you pay for.

DON'T BUY THIS, worth nil stars. This sounds like someone has heard the groups records & has tried to copy the music on A organ. Read more
