A beautiful book capturing the memories of James Herriot. I bought this second hand from Amazon market place and was so impressed with the book I bought two more for my mother and brother, both avid fans of James Herriot and Yorkshire people.
The book has beautiful illustrations such as maps, photographs, pen and ink drawings, vintage such as newspaper cuttings etc. James Herriot has captured and shared his memories which are humorous, sad and heart-warming as he recalls his life as a new vet in the Yorkshire countryside.
James Herriot has written a brief introduction as to why he decided to write the book - extract as follows:
'And now the richest threads of those years have been gathered together in one handsome volume. The publication of this book gives me the chance to pick out my favourite chapters - the ones of my family and I have laughed at over the years and the ones my readers have said they most enjoyed.
The story of my early professional life is all here and as I turn the pages and study the pictures of the places where I have worked and played I am grateful that I found the time to put it all on paper; because it is a time that will not come again. The marginal drawings are particularly nostalgic, pulling my memory gently back again and again to the ambience of things past'.
Enjoy from a Yorkshire lass.
